I finally pulled the trigger on a full setup , pretty amazing what is capable of. A couple things I wish I would have researched though. I sold my charge master and some other things to fund this setup and if I would have known you have to manually set your charge weight with powder in the pan, I would have definitely kept the charge master just for that task .... all in all the AD is pretty spot on right out of the box, it is averaging 10sec a charge but every now and again it overthrows .02-.04. I’m still googling setup and fine tuning of this setup and hopefully will get it dialed in soon. Overall well worth the money to me !!! I will also say it would be nice to have one video dedicated to setup , operation and fine tuning ..... anybody ?

There are a couple of ways to set the charge weight. Throw the charge you want and save it in a fired case or small jar, or weigh out a screw and file it till you get it where you want it. If you search here you can probably find more. I manually throw the lever on the Lee unit and trickle up to what I want, takes less than a minute.
If you are having a problem with consistant over throws, make sure the spout on the trickler is set to run uphill, then play with the lever on the back to slow the trickler down as it approaches your set weight.

haha , I was throwing random stuff on my bench on the scale trying to find something close in weight!! For the lever on the back , is (-) slower ? Or slows the trickler later ?

Hey NVscout, if you have a perfect load and want to start with the right amount of powder everytime.
Just pull your favorite load, and dump the powder in the pan. Works everytime for me.

Like Jake said I have random hardware filed to the weights I want to save. Find something close and file a little off. I label them and save them in a drawer. It is an awesome machine.

I ordered a bunch of small plastic centrifuge tubes, a tube rack and Gamo .177 lead BBs.

I'll print a label with my desired charge weight, insert it in the tube so the printing is readable, add enough BBs to get close to the weight, then add spilled gunpowder I clean up to get to weight.

After I use it to set the auto-trickler, the sealed tube goes in the tube rack where it will wait until the next time it's needed.

Which scale wuld you recommend? The 120i is about US $500, so anything better would increase the cost of an already pricey system. There are setups with Satorius scales available for a premium.
Not sure what your really asking. I have had the Hornady , charemaster , gempro and finally the A&D FX120i. I would absolutely rec the A&D over any other one I have tried. You don’t have to go balls deep and buy the $1400 setup off the bat , you could buy the scale and a little dandy trickler while throwing with scoops for a starter setup , while slowly buying all the add on’s...... Hopefully that helps answer your question.

Ruskin said he wondered why there was not a setup with" a really good scale". I was wondering what he considered really good.
something on the order of fx120. I was just wondering out-loud if one of the big names produced a product similar to the autotrickle in speed and accuracy if it would sell. I think the autotrickler is a good product, i also think there is room for refinement of the overall package.

The beauty of the Auto-trickler is that it is leveraging the laboratory scale economy of scale. If someone like RCBS developed an anto-measure with this type of sensor, the R&D would be spread over a small market making the price high.

I think the level of integration is fine and the phone app is going to make it better.

If Area419 was to make one more improvement, j would suggest a base that holds the scale and the trickler, with leveling feet so the base could be leveled, the scale could be leveled upon that and then the trickler could be adjusted. After that, if you move the setup, you would only have to re-level the base to get everything perfect.

That's what I was trying to say by further refinement of the overall package.

This is for the guys who are looking for a better scale: I don’t own an FX nor sartorius scale, but I can tell you that the resolution these scales offer is way more than you would ever need for purposes of reloading. You are measuring a powder drop, not fentanyl dosages

When I say better scale, I primarily want a scale that doesn’t drift and the better resolution is just a plus. Never underestimate the power of OCD.

Do y’all run check weights every time you fire the scale up? If so, I’m guessing that absolute accuracy/quality of the check weight doesn’t matter since it is a relative calibration? As long as you use the same one every time GTG?

This guy just posted this today.

very interesting, might just have to try it out.
I like it. If it is $60, that's $140 less than the Auto-trickler but it's a project and it looks like setup is more fiddly.

For me, the plug and play of the Auto-trickler/Auto-throw combo is a luxury I was willing to pay for.

Resolution and drift resistance usually go hand in hand, as the quality goes up. However, it comes at a huge premium for the return.

I’m an obsessive myself, but I’ve conditioned myself to try to recognize diminishing returns. Ive used a chargemaster for years now and likely won’t do anything more

It is the type of sensor. A cheap strain gauge is going to drift. The A&D has I think a magnetic restorative force sensor which measures the weight by the amount of power required to lift the pan with a magnetic field.

The resolution and lack of drift come with the sensor. If there was a less expensive +/-0.05 grain scale that didn't drift, lots of people would use it.

Since it doesn't exist, we might as well use an A&D and meter to the kernel.

that’s where I’m at with it.

Yes, everytime with a lyman check weights.

It would bug me not to use a calibration weight with a certified class that has a tolerance tighter than what I'm trying to load for. I get that if 42.20 is your load then no matter if it is truly 42.20 or actually 42.36 being loaded as long as you load it precisely the same each and every time you will still be loaded the correct load.

Hopefully that makes coherent sense...

Yes, it's the difference between accuracy and precision and accuracy really isn't required.

That's why I have centrifuge tubes to make standards for whichever load weights I need. Their weights shouldn't change sitting in a centrifuge tube rack so I that takes care of precision. Checking with a reference wait should get it close enough to accurate.

Adam's site this morning says the V2 are out of stock and no longer available as of 5/13. V3 supposed to ship in June.

Now I'm really confused.

So assuming you have the same A&D scale, whats the difference between that the Area 419 complete 'package' does, and what is on the AutoTrickler site? Or is it the same thing and Area 419 is just a retailer?

Area 419 has a bunch of bullet upgrades.
