Got the long distance shooting bug a few months back. Purchased a 700 XCR in .223 and put a Vortex 25x on it. I have the same gun in 300 win mag ordered. The .223 will be to get the shooting form down, and the .300 for the eventual long distance shooting.

I just bought the Hornady Lock-N-Load Classic Kit. I will load the .223 and .300 WM for long distance accuracy, and will also load .243 adn 30/06 for sure.

Tell me what else I need, and why YOU suggest that particular brand and item. I'm talking everything from brass, primers, and powder to dies, bullets, scales, bullet gauges, case prep equipment, the whole 9 yards.

I know you need more answers so ask the questions, and I'll answer what I can.

Thanks

Les

Spend the money on the Hornady/Stoney Point headspace gages, the Hornady/Stoney Point modified case gages to find your lands and finally the Hornady/Stoney Point bullet comparator bushings, to find the bullet's ogive. Maybe $120-$150 for the lot, for the carts you plan on shooting.

For 223, the Rem 7 1/2 primers, the CCI BR-4s, or the Federal GMM 205Ms will work will work well. For the 300WM, Federal 215Ms should suffice, or most any other large rifle magnum primers.

For die sizing, I like the Redding Bushing dies, but RCBS and Forster dies work well. For seating, I use Hornady InLine seating dies with their Micro Seating stem, but I also use the Redding Micro Seater and the Forster Micro Seater, as well.

For shoulder bumps, in conjunction with the various neck sizers I use, I would recommend the Redding Body Dies. The body dies allow you to bump the shoulders when you need to, but still control the neck diameters with the bushing dies.

For just sizing the necks only, or for sizing the entire case, I like the Redding bushing neck dies, or their bushing FL sizing dies.

I use the latter for FL sizing semi auto fired brass where I want to control the neck diameter, but still want to do a FL sizing on the cases in one pass.

Some good suggestions so far. I can tell you that after trying various bits of kit I wouldn't now be without my RCBS Chargemaster and also my Stainless steel cleaning set up. The other is a Forster press but I see you're sorted for a press already. I also really like the RCBS strip primer tool.

Redding and Forster dies are the best, though don't discount the Lee Collet Die for neck sizing only (use mine on .223 and .300WM). Its cheap but it really works.

Re: Ok guys spend my money on new equipment!

So all of this is what I have found reloading with a non progressive press

Accurate way of dispensing powder. I use a PACT brand from midway. I can hold .01 grains and just push a button. Little slow, but its right.

Flash hole debur tool.

Case trimmer. Lots of options, some chamfer some don’t, some powered some by you. Pick something that meets your $

Vibratory Cleaner (Midway Usa kit)

Bullet Puller (Because shit does happen)

Hand Primer Seater (For me its faster then using a press)

A case holder, helps keep organized (I use old pistol boxes, you know the plastic bottoms that come with pistol ammo)

Primer pocket cleaner / reamer. (Also important when reloading 5.56, which has a crimped primer pocket.

Good set of books (Guess the internet has changed that some)

A good quiet place free from distraction. Until you develop a good process that works, avoid the T.V. and focus on what your doing.

Hornady one shot case lube (Works awesome !)

A good place to record your loads and results (Guilty)

I would recommend spending some time reading the 8 stickies at the beginning of this forum section. Those 8 threads answer all of your questions and also provide some very good tips and visuals that will get you well on your way to enjoying the sport of rolling your own. Buy the good stuff or you will find that you did not spend wisely and will spend again as you get more involved with the game.
