I was exploring east of Fort Irwin south of Death Valley and came across this brass lying on the ground. It looks oldish, head maybe cut on a lathe. Wonder if anyone has a sense of when this piece of brass was manufactured and what its story may be?

Old military brass. Made in Utah by the Utah Ordinance Plant which was a division of Remington at the time. That plant was only operational (for ammo) between 1942 and 1943. Your sample was obviously 1943.

It's most likely M2 ammo brass.

This site is filled with knowledge. I guessed the stamp indicated 1943. Shoot in training I suppose. I just looked up the Utah Ordinance Plant and this guy is the one of 400 million 50 cal rounds produced in its two years of operation!
