Rifle Scopes old school ar optics mount/scope question

i have a couple of colt sporter's w/ the a1 sight system w/ a fixed handle.

How would you go about mounting optics to the handle for shooting? i would like to keep the cost low, and a simple design.

what optics would be okay for just plinking not long distance. maximum range 150 yards but mostly under 100-75 yards.
requirements:
not expensive, it is just meant to be a simple solution not extravagant.
variable power.
cost, keep it low. 100 maybe 150.

100-150 yards, and I get to choose between irons and a scope mpunted on top of a charging handle at an akward, uncomfortable height?
I'd pick irons every time.

The only time I'd ever use magnified optics mounted on a charging handle would be for load development for a rifle I was going to shoot Highpower Service Rifle.....

Irons are great for 200 yard shots, just apply the fundamentals. Glass isn't going to make a poor shot any better.
