I was about to purchase a STI LAWMAN 4.0 for my CCW. Today at fusionarms.com
i saw a 4 inch commander kit that comes with a pre fit slide, frame, and barrel. The idea of "building" my own 1911 is cool( I have put together many ARs but a 1911 would be a totally different ball park for me) Ive already seen building it wont save money, its just the fact of saying yes i did this myself.
One negative to building is that you dont have the warranty you would get else where
I would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks
Ryan

Re: ? on 1911 kit

I decided to use a 1911 as my "race gun" and do the work myself... I still had to have a smith go through and fix some bugs. It did work but wasn't safe. Get a few books and read them, I recomend hollocks ( I think thats how its spelled). There is a lot going on on a 1911 when the trigger is pulled. A lot more complex than an ar in my opinion. At any rate, buy the kit, buy a few good books and have a smith on speed dial for questions. Thats my .02. Good luck brother in arms

Downzero,
Thanks for the response. I am thinking of just ordering the lawman for my CCW and then getting the kit for a range gun(where flawless function isnt a life or death situation)

I'm just saying that the PROCESS of assembling that gun, even if the slide, frame, and barrel are fit already, is much more involved than it seems, as every single part needs to be fit to that particular set of parts.

If you are wanting to built a range gun, sarco has frame and slides pretty cheap. That way if the project gets fubared, you are only out a few hundred. The parts they have are rock island frames and slides, which is what the sti lawman started life out as. (rock island and sti are sister companies) or so it looks
