I am putting together a AR15 and need to know the difference between the two reference the buffer tube and stock. What are the pros and cons of each. I am using a RRA lower if that matters. I want to use a 6 position M4 type stock. I have not decided on the upper yet. Thanks in advance.

Re: ? on mil spec vs commercial

a Mil spec tube is smaller in diameter where the stock slides on the tube itself. On the commercial it is larger.

With commercial tubes the tubes are threaded to the tube and thats it. With a Mil spec the tube is threaded and then turned down in diameter.

A commercial stock will fit on a mil spec tube, a mil spec stock will not fit on the commercial tube.

Mil-Spec vs Commercial

•Buffer tubes come either as Mil-Spec or Commerical diameter. The Mil-Spec buffer tube is 1.148" in diameter while the Commercial buffer tube is 1.168" in diameter. The standard is Mil-Spec
COLT, STAG are mil spec

Bushmaster, RRA, DMPS, and most others are commercial.

As far as I am concerned it doesn,t matter which one you use they both work equally as well ,I mean you can get an aftermarket tube thats better than either one of these but I wouldn,t waste my money, I have several Ar,s some have the mil spec and some have the commercial, If I was building a rifle I would pick the one thats most available and go with it. here are some discussions on the subject,
