Canada has always been like this.
Some provinces, like Alberta, are more lenient than others when it comes to self defense, but you still don't really have the right to self defense up there.
Specifically in Canada they seem very focused on disproportionate response. You have to respond with "reasonable force". Guns are pretty much never considered a "reasonable response", especially in the more liberal provinces.
Criminals have more rights than law abiders up there. It's fucked up. Glad I left.

sigh, ive always wanted a skull coffee mug made from a fafo champion.
Funny story. A good friend was traveling abroad and found an excellent cast skull mug that looked real and bought it, overseas. He was stopped at customs and questioned extensively regarding where he bought it and whether it was real or not. He finally convinced them it was a copy.
