I tried the search first but did not find exactly what I am looking for. My main question is in what order do you go about working up you loads to shoot the best in your rifle. I have done the ladder test before but that was as far as I went. I am interested in seating depth too. Do you start with bullets touching the lands and work back or the oppisite? Any links or book recomendations are appreciated. I would like to learn how to ring every ounce of accuracy from the rounds (300wm and 308). I plan on shooting mostly 600 and 1000 yards with these.
I am shooting a armalite AR30 in 300WM, it has a 1/10 barrel. From the reading I have been doing on here I am planing on using 200-210 gr bullets and R22 and H1000 powders to start with. Second question is where do you reference bullet weight in relation to twist rate? I have a couple load books and none list the twist rate with the bullet weights. I would just like to do some research on optimum rates per bullet, just for my own FYI.
The last thing I am pondering is, I have read people on here who say they have guns that did not shoot as well with the bullet touching the lands as they do with a small jump. I do not see how that would be. If the whole goal is to start the bullet straight down the rifling why/how would making it jump help accuracy? It seems to me that would hinder things. I do understand touching the lands can raise pressures in the chamber. Is this part of the reason for setting the bullet back? Also I should mention I plan on hand feeding rounds if the oal is too much for the mag. My only interest is in the accuracy of the round, not feeding from the mag. I understand that appears to be why some are jumping so much.
Anyway thanks everyone! I am just trying to learn all that I can so I can make good choices from the begining. Any books, threads, websites, ect I need to see just let me know and I will check them out. Thanks Chris.

Search doesn't work too well here. It's unfortunate because of the huge cache of info lost here.

Glen Zediker's Handloading for Competition will send you on your way. Don't let the man's writing style bother you just because it bothers everyone else (except Monte).

Re: Order for working up loads.

Each rifle is different.

Why can I take 3 different cars exactly the same off the dealers lot and drive it and they will each get a different mileage reading? Even burning the same kind of gass and over the same route.
