I am ordering a new Hornady progressive press. I will be loading for the 45 Colt. I already have an RCBS die set for the 45 Colt. and I am still deciding about a crimp die.

In addition I want to order:
1. Shell plate
2. COP die(powder check)
3. Powder drop expander

Do I need to order anything else with the press to start reloading for 45 Colt?? Do I need one of the powder tube extensions?? Anything else?? I would like to order it all at one time. And this is my first progressive, so I want to make sure I have everything I need to start with?? Tom.

Re: Ordering new press-little help.

I don't think you need the powder check die as it's a case activated powder thrower. I don't run one on my LnL press.

I would get the Lee Factory Crimp die and some extra bushings and extra case retainer springs (the loop shaped coil spring that holds the cases into engagement with the shell plate).

Hornady will replace broken springs for free, but they only do 1 at a time and it sucks not to have a backup when you want to load. They cost like $4 for a 3 pack.

Re: Ordering new press-little help.

I disagree about the powder check die not being needed, caliber/powder should be the deciding factor, 40sw using Titegroup a powder check should be a required item, 45 Colt I don't know, but couldn't hurt.

Why's that? Serious question, as I've run about 3k 40's and 10's through this and haven't seen a problem yet. I do keep an eye on the thrower level though.

Re: Ordering new press-little help.

a double charge of titegroup has blown up many a Glock 40, with other powders a double charge is readly apparent, its better to be safe than sorry

Re: Ordering new press-little help.

Double charge is a good point, I've never had any issue with it but as the saying goes "when you need it you don't have it".

In that situation it would be good to have it for the 45LC as well, a cast bullet with Unique or Red Dot underneath won't spill over the case if you double charge for some reason, and a double charge of that stuff will cause some trouble...
