I know this isn't remotely gun related, but I am trying to get an idea of dental work costs between states. I am in CT and need crowns and post, but holy hell its like $2500 a tooth. Never mind implants(teeth, not boobs), thats like $6000.Thats a nice rifle or a shit ton of ammo.

Anybody able to give me some ball park figure what they paid for similar procedures in other states?

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I just burned through around $5000 clams since August getting caught up on some neglected repairs. A total of three crowns, including two root canals; one of which required a crown lengthening, AKA gum shortening, in order to proceed with the crown. Also had a chipped tooth magically repaired. And detailed, deep cleaning as well.

After years of paying for the orthodontics for my daughters and the coaxing of my wife to stop being a martyr (Or was it "A Pussy"? Or perhaps "Cheapskate"?) and get my friggin choppers in order, I finally got the message and got off my wallet.

My amazing new smile has caused a wicked spike in the already frequent and ongoing sexual harassment I experience from the women in the buildings I work in...

Some people offer that it may be that I am working on the doors to their offices and thus they have to dress nicely, walk my way, squeeze by me, smell nice, say hi, etc., in order to get to their work...

Uh huh...

Re: OT: Dental work prices

A numnber of Docs have/are setting up shop just across the border in Mexico.

Uncle, boss, and a friend have jumped the border and saved about half. One of them had a nearly whole mouth full (except his front 8) of veneers done for just under $10K, which from what I've been told is about $20K here. As good or better procedures without the stupid high costs associated with US practices.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I just hasd a molar pulled. The Doc told me an implant is about 3K, gold crowns 1.5K. But if the root goes bad you will need a root canal, another chunk. Ists a racket. I have a friend who used to go to Mexico before things got so fucked up and got work doen for about 25% of what it costs here...and some of them do excellent work...hes really pleased.

Consider a vacation...fly into Cancun, get the work done, (theyll give you the GOOD pain meds) and spend the savings on a week on the beach driking margaritas..

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I know guys are going out of country to get dental (good dental work) for a lot less (including time, airline, beach hotel, etc) & still come out ahead

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I can just see it
hello I need to get some dental work
ok suck on this churro for twenty min I will be back in...

ummm well that is how it is going in my mind anywayz

Re: OT: Dental work prices

Ive driven, alone, all over the most remote parts of Mexico, and never had any problem. Now I wouldnt drive there, but flying into a major tourist area, and staying at a good hotel, dont wander off by yuorself, and youl lbe ok.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

Thanks gents. I might just phone dentists in different states. Seems like where I live everything is a lot more than most places.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

Two sets of prices, one for the uninsured and one for the insured, the uninsured always is much higher, A crown locally is about $800.00, 25 minutes initially and 15 min fitting later, cost of crown $250.00 dentist price, so $550.00 for les than one hour of dental work, PRICELESS. Seriously, insureance pays less than $500.00 for the same when I who have no insurance and pays at the desk on exit $800.00. Now that is Bullshit in my opinion.

Not so true. Overhead in a dental office is 60%-70%. I wish it was all profit!

I know quite a few Dentists in Israel. They are well trained, and in the US standard. The prices if you are paying cash are much better. Most people in Israel have insurance of the national nature. The best dentist are in the private sector and this is were you will be going.

I know several people who would go to Austria to have dental work done. The airfare, hotel, food, and procedures were still much less then having it done in the US. Next time I have a 5k dental bill, which seems to be every 4 years :(, I am heading over seas to have it done.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

the dentist I go to make the crown there out of a block of porcelain its freaking cool to watch and you don't have to wait a couple of weeks and get numbed up twice it is milled in like 20 minutes

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I just had my first crown last week. Total was almost $900, insurance paid half, so I was out of pocket $440.

Very upsetting as this is the first time I have paid for medical/dental: ever. I miss the military sometimes.

That machine is over 100k, not counting someone to run it. The porcelain blocks are not that expensive, but it takes alot of units to make up the cost of the equipment and labor.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I had an AU crown installed late last year and it seems to me that the cost was somewhere around $1,100. He used gold because it was a last molar and he said it would wear better than porcelain in the particular application.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I had an implant and crown done last year ran me $2700 after insurance, I think total it was $6000. That was in Texas.

That seems high to me!

Good advice! Very close to the same hardness of your natural teeth. Plus all the gangsters like them!

Re: OT: Dental work prices

@ the OP. Call around to different dentists. There is quite a spread in prices for the same procedure from one to the next. It is hard to give you a estimate because each case is individual and no two treatment plans are ever alike.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

Medical tourism is growing more and more. Some countries have specialties and are good at what they do and cheaper by huge numbers than other places.

Google dental tourism and they'll be plenty to read. If you're a little adventurous you'll likely be able to get a nice 10 day vacation and the dental work you want done in some nice location. All for the same $$$ as doing it at home.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

@ BigDaddyDMD

What town/city do you practice in?

Good post, Jason, Thanks

Re: OT: Dental work prices

There is a growing trade for dental tourism. My recommendation is to thouroughly research the dentist and the place you are considering getting the dentistry completed at, along with reviews. For example, I have seen some excellent work with excellent materials come from Mexico. If the patient hadn't informed me that they were done in Mexico, I would have assumed the work was done in the states.

On the other hand I have seen some horrible, medically negligent dentistry come out of Mexico also. Base/cheap metals instead of nobels, horrible esthetics, poor longevity, and the patient that thought they were going to save a lot of money ended up paying more in the end to get it fixed correctly. Buy once, cry once is the mantra you hear alot here on the site, and it translates into everything in life, including medical/dental procedures.

I am not bashing dental tourism at all. I just want to make sure you all are aware to be extremely careful and picky if you choose to go that route. Good and bad dentisty exist both in the States and outside of the States, with the big difference being there is no board oversight/avenue for recourse outside of the States.

Parallel live QQ. Just had about the same thing here except for the gum work.

Most of the time you can get the same thing on this side of the border if you pay cash. I would not go to TJ for all the Tea in China.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

If something goes wrong i.e. infection/etc.. and you had the procedure in Mexico you don't have any recourse whereas here you do. That in itself is worth having the work done here.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

I dont intend on going out of US, but it definitely seems wise to go out of state,at least this state.

Re: OT: Dental work prices

Do this / plus 1

Tell you the truth . Go out of country if you got major work cost . Get your Maj. cost Dental work done & get a vacation & recuperation in the warm heat w/ Good food & top accommodations while saving money .
My recommendation is . grab a ticket & pack your leisure wear & head to Malaysia/ Kuala Lumpur ) . I been there 4-times . exchange rate is GTG in your favor for the Ringgit @ 3-to-1 usd . & (for example) . I had a full torso cat-scan with a respiratory specialist for only about 300-usd & narcotic prescription pain med. was less than 20-usd .
Kuala Lumpur Is 'big' new city & up to date w/ English language being well spoken there .

Doing this is nothing new . There are ( Private upper-end ) hospital/dental there that is great & not offered to the average Mal. citizen. & Going out or Country is 'common practice' for people flying-in from all over the world to get Med. & Dental work done for themselves .
My wife works hospital for living many years & I am well accustomed to being around them . I noticed 1st thing that all the Med. certification with the specialist I had was UK schooled & I noticed a lot of US cert. there also . most of the equipment looked reasonably up-to-date also with 'cleanliness' as the rule for facility .
If I had anything maj. dental that is going to be over 5-K $ in cost . I would go back there again for a 5th time & be money ahead w/ top work done to my mouth.
.
