OK Since I saw a post on this - think I'll throw this out.

Anyone have a Dodge Cummings deisel, and have had problem with the "Please wait" - engine not starting?

My dad has one of these he just bought, he thinks it's the air heater or a relay to it...

Looking for common problems

Fuel pump/sending unit is a common problem with 2000-2003

Re: OT Dodge cummings deisel

have similar problems, but only on very cold mornings. figure the glow plugs just can't keep up.

Forgot to mention - if he plugs in the block heater it will start after an hour or two - so fuel pump may be out...

Does it use glow plugs? My dad thot not but I think all deisels have to have them, just not hte pre-heaters...pre-heat the air not the plug?

Re: OT Dodge cummings deisel

Dodge hasn't used glow plugs since 1989 i think. They use an intake heater(grid heater)
Make sure the plug isn't faulty or is disconnected.

Re: OT Dodge cummings deisel

Yup, it doesnt have glow plugs. The heater element is between the air horn and the intake manifold. Its about an inch tall. As I recall, it draws something like 750 watts when engaged. If its real cold, cycle the heater element a couple times and see if that works. When the wait goes off, turn the ignition off, and turn it back on to get some more heat. I know the Cummins can start at 40 below without plugging it in. It wont be pretty for a few minutes, but it will start.

Re: OT Dodge cummings deisel

CUMMINS not cummings. that sounds like the title of a porno.

When I had my Ram I always plugged it up at night no matter what. it seems like your heat comes out hot as soon as you start it to. so thats an added bonus.

Re: OT Dodge cummings deisel

Correct on the spelling. Would it not be also correct to use too when talking about the heat? Regards. FM

What year is the truck ? The fuel systems very greatly depending on the year .
The intake heater sets on the cyl head on the left side and you can check its operation with a test light . The solenoids that control the heater , 2 circuits built into 1 housing , are usually on the drivers inner fender by the battery .
