Well yes... night vision for LE
Even the Fire department here had thermals 12-14 years ago, someone's late to the party
NV and thermal has been around in LE for a long time. Very long. The latest and greatest is thermal cameras on drones. Which work very well for finding people. Good or bad
However what LE uses as far as that is nothing the average Joe can’t buy either. Good ones are expensive though

They are amazing for SAR and, as someone pointed out above, kids lost in the woods. The fire guys use them in smoke-filled buildings because they find people before they die.
Not sure about other states, but we were strictly prohibited from using them for any kind of 'searches' without a warrant. In other words, you think there's a grow operation or something like that? Well, you can't just go around with a thermal looking for one without a warrant. Period, end of story. It's not spy gear in the hands of L.E. As much as folks want to see giant conspiracy's in some of this, the technology is limited in its employment by due process.
Could it be abused? Sure. Right up until a judge rules anything inadmissible, the States attorney reams your chief's ass and the chief skins you alive.
It's funny how many folks are freaking out about local police having thermals... when their phone, Alexa and cars... are reporting their every word and movement to big tech (aka the modern NKVD) which happily is sharing your data with big government. And doing so with impunity because you signed away your privacy when you got that smart phone or bought a new car (you know the fine print when you sign the New Car Purchase Agreement says The GPS System can track you and you are ok with that and with GM using the data any way we want, right? You read all that fine print at the car dealer? Before signing?) Big Tech is far more dangerous than any local judicial system and everyone is volunteering to be spied on because GPS maps and Voice-activate restaurant reservations through OnStar are really fun and convenient. Your computer is even storing your driving habits for download... you didn't know.

Every call you make is being scanned for keywords and may be stored. Maybe just for 'market research...' Maybe to be used against you when Zuck and the Rasputin guy (and all their leftist vice-presidents) running Google and Apple and Verizon get their way and put in ChiCom social scores. Then, along with woke banks, can decide to lock your bank account because they don't like the meme you posted or the fact that you donated $50 to a Canadian trucker.

banned? interesting. and informative if true. on a similar note to above things,it was going around after the rodney king riots that the police had no statutory obligation to intervene in the comision of a crime that they were observing. anyone know if that idea has substance? considering the riots on the left coast recently,seems that there is some truth there. maybe depends on local laws and jurisdiction?
the police have zero obligation to protect you. and truthfully, how can they? no one can be everywhere at once; it is simply impossible. which is why i have never understood why the masses are willing to hand off the responsibility for their own lives and safety over to someone else.
same same for accident scenes. i've seen people make the 911 call, then proceed to stand there with their thumb in their ass....waiting for someone else to dive in and take action. hell, i've been on scene and even when the police and first responders show up, the police stand around watching. i suggested to the one cop about maybe thinking about directing traffic, which he responded "oh yeah". then the second cop, the EMTs were calling in a helicopter, and he's just standing there after i suggested the other direct traffic. i suggest to him that he might want to set up a landing zone for the incoming bird. "oh, good idea". then i had to chase my equipment down from the fucking ill-equipped EMTs that tried to keep it.

The state should pay all costs of all legal processes, to include substantial restitution if you are found not guilty.
If a law is found unconstitutional, all persons who wrote it, voted for it, and signed it lose their offices immediately.

As it turned out they were getting extra funding for making it look like there was a severe youth alcohol problem by rabbidly going after parties where there would be underage kids, then once they found one that was drinking, they would give every kid an MIP whether they were drinking or not, and claim it was because they had access. It was a like like the COVID scam, where as most of these youth "problem drinkers," weren't even drinking. The police knew it, DA knew it, and the judge knew it.

I knew a kid who got an MIP for being at party for all the seniors. Didn't drink, wasn't drinking, and lost a very good scholarship for getting an MIP. His story was the same as everyones. You would go to court, tell the DA and judge you weren't drinking. They would tell you it didn't matter, you had access. 24 hours of public service and 24 hours and "alcohol classes." It spawned a whole other useless industry. Or that unless industry spawned the problem, I guess is more likely.
