Gunsmithing Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

Rex,
I'm not the best for this question but i will try it.
It is my understanding that poly barrels are not that great for precision work. They work well with putting a lot of rounds down range and they clean up real easy.
If i had a choice i'd say go for a cut rifled barrel. There are many makers out there that use the cut rifle method. Just my .02

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

I've used a pac nor barrel and I really like their products. As for polygonal rifling, nothing wrong with it but at the same time with modern bullet construction it really isn't necessary.

I also agree with sota, cut rifling is preferred. Which is why I no longer have pac nor barrels.

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

I belive the Poly rifling would be similar to Broughtons 5c style, Its button rifled too. So far Ive been impressed with the way the 5c rifling has held up in my .243AI. Its lasted longer than my previous 3 groove button rifled barrel I had on it befor.

My thinking is that the profiled edges of the polygonal and canted land rifling doesnt have the sharp edge to waer away as fast. I cant prove it, but you can look at my 3 groove barrles throat and then the 5c and you dont see the same amount of wear, even with more shots through it.

I too am kind of on a cut rifled kick too. You may want to try Brux barrels.. so far I like what I see.

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

So Maybe the Noveske barrel I was gonna get for my wanna be precision AR10 might not be the cat's ass either. Ok , next question, optimum length & profile? I don't want to go over 31", and wonder what length I could get away with & still have decent accuracy, while keeping the weight of the rifle such that I could still pack it without much trouble. Kinda vague, I know.

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

Rex,
Can you give us a little more info? Intended use? What kinda rig are you wanting to use? What stock?

All that can make a difference as to what we may suggest. Bottom line it is YOUR money. YOU will have final say as to what feels good to you.

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

Sure. For.300 WinMag, I'm using an HS precision PSS072 stock with the African barrel channel, I live near the coast range mountains, so maximum range around here is about 1000yds, but over east it might be fun to push a 220gr. Smk to 1500yds. I bowhunt mostly, so I guess target shooting would be the primary use, but would still like to launch 200gr Accubonds at a bull elk if circumstance allows, so I don't want a safe queen. The first thing that comes to mind is a Sendero type profile, but I have a friend that has a 28 or 29 inch barrel, and conveyed to me that there is a big velocity payoff in the last inch or two of barrels over 26" long using heavy bullets & slower powders. Just wondering if there is a magic, & harmonically gifted length & contour for long range precision given the parameters I vaguely outlined here. Accuracy, velocity, portability. In that order.

Re: Pac Nor Polygonal Twist

I have a Pac-Nor 1:8 Poly on my 6XC.
I have been very pleased with the results. I can't say if it is any faster than other barrels, never compared it to anything else.
It cleans up very easily and hold <1/2 MOA on paper to 725, the furthest I have put it on paper. No problems hitting 2 MOA steel at 985.
I don't have an exact round count, but based on bullets, I have in excess of 2000 rounds through the barrel. Still shooting 1/2 MOA or less vertical on paper last week at 600.
When this barrel goes away, I will replace it with another poly barrel.
