People who dump kittens and puppies should be strung up….

With spring and summer here… been a rash of people dumping off unwanted litters around the area. Kittens and puppies both.

Not bothering to take them to the shelter (paperwork and fees? Don’t know if shelter charges for surrenders of litters??) and leaving them in a parking lot or by the road?? That is lower than whale shit.

On the bright side…. This little guy adopted me on Tuesday. After a bath, a couple of days of quarantine away from the other cats and a vet check… he thinks he rules the house.

Meet General “Blackjack” Pershing. He has been stuck to me like glue and eating like a cavalry horse! He loves belly rubs!!

So far Boudicca is afraid of him. General Sherman is not happy. And Pouncy the old man who has been through this before… seems to be accepting him fine. Couple of weeks, they will all be sleeping in a pile together…

Baby kittens are so cute!!!

A few weeks ago, one of the activity directors at the skilled nursing facility where my wife stays brought in this tomcat kitten. She found him on the street but could not keep him at her place. Originally, she offered him to us but one of the CNAs wanted him so that her son could have a pet. Turns out that her son is allergic to this cat. So, she gave him to us and my wife named him Tiger because of the stripes.

At the end of the week, I took him to the vet and got some vax going. He weighed in 4.1 pounds which makes him about 4 months old. By the end of the month, I can have him neutered, which will cut down on the spraying. And most of the caterwauling once he might be able to smell the girls in heat. I keep him as an inside cat but let him keep his claws, should he ever get out.

However, he is affectionate and likes to play and I have claw marks on my calves to prove it.

But he will also get up on my computer desk and beg for attention and then finally lay down with his head on one of my wrists.

On Sunday mornings, I bring my wife to the house so she can look around and get little things that she wants and visit with him, as well.

He runs so fast that I felt I should have named him Einstein for going faster than the speed of light.

Or, Painless. He can bang into a chair or slide across the linoleum in the kitchen and bang into something and keep on going.

Other times, I call him Silly Willie.

of the 5 i have had here, all are foundlings-three found me. the other 2 took about 6 weeks to get near me. now the 2 left are after me all the time.
cats are easy. admire those that take in dogs of any age. you just don't know what you are getting. they are social group animals so seems it usually works out. semi rural so there are frequent strays around, dogs and cats both.
the one above could be the twin of my newest. had him about 2 years.

Behind the farm I grew up on ; across the river there was a very high end private camp ground . Those assholes would often get a summer dog- or cat but the dogs were the real problem. And then fucking leave them before they went back to where ever the fuck they came from .
And leave the dogs or maybe dump them off later - all sorts of breeds - Dobermans German shepherds ect . After a summer in the Shiawasse refugee the ones that got strong and mean lived and as things got cooler and colder they came and killed kids, (baby goats ) chickens , sheep , yearlings calves on top of deer and rabbits pheasants ect .
Only time in my like I went into the woods without a gun got surrounded by a pack of 3 feral dogs - went up a stack of round hey bails and kept them at bay with a hiking staff .

My dad went out that night and shot 2 of the three , and then two more that were biting the back legs of a calf - and several more - when that camp ground was closed when I was a bout 15 and slowly became part of the refuge the problem entirely stopped hence my theory about the private camp assholes dumping their dogs like they dumped their kids at boarding school. Takes an emotional cripple and a real asshole to abandon a dog like that .

I agree about scum who abandon a pet. Hope they die of a terminal case of herpes.

I think they caught the guy who tied his pit bull to a fence in a gully in FL (think it was FL) during a major storm. Cop saved it. I’d like to see that mofo meet his new husband in prison.

Wife and I found two kittens on the side of the road in the middle of the woods by our house last June. Someone had to have abandoned them out there. Was almost 11pm and they ran off as we got near them. Grabbed the thermal and tracked those fools down. Couple days later their sister wandered into the yard and about got hoof stomped by a deer. They were sick and probably wouldn't have lasted much longer on their own if we hadn't found them. They're my buddies now and are healthy outdoor cats doing the Lord's work of killing mice and other unwanted rodents.

I was out at our property hunting doves. I was about 19. I heard a gun shot and a dog screaming for his life! Then two or three more shots. Then silence. Walked back to my truck, went up the road a bit. Found a dog tied to a fence post, he was killed with a shotgun. So yea I think I would FUBAR someone if I caught them doing shit to an animal!
Sometimes you just hate fucking people for what they are and what they do!😡😡

Don’t think so but just for clarification- you’re not including hunting - pest control and the slaughter of livestock correct?
Not at all, I get killing pest that cost a farmer or land owner money, hunting or harvesting livestock.
I’m talking about people who throw kittens or puppy’s off bridges into water or the likes when they are just too lazy to drop them off at a shelter.
That kind of heartless shit !
Or abusing a pet.
I do get there is a feral dog packs that have become dangerous and have to be put down.
And that is only for the fact that someone just turned them loose out in the country and now they have become dangerous to others.
There are folks that say if they see a dog in the country that don’t have a coller on they will automatically shoot them.
Because it’s a real problem in some areas.
I personally think I would observe before shooting it like a coyote.
I did not know about this feral dog problem in the country and now am abit more watchful of the issue.
A pack of dogs with no collers my gun will go off safety from now on.

Strung up?

Anyone who dumps an animal should be tortured until their throat is raw and their pleas to die can scarcely be heard any longer.

FUCKERS

Good for you being adopted! Beautiful cat
Make the punishment fit the crime.

Take them 2000 miles from home, strip them naked, no cash or credit card, and 'dump' them on the side of the road. In January.

I'm just outside of town surrounded by orchards and alfalfa, and being just a couple miles outside city limits we become the dumping ground and frequently get trash left on the roadside and in the orchards for those too lazy to drive 5 more miles and spend a few bucks at the county dump, as well as dealing with plenty of abandoned dogs and cats ... sucks.

Sometimes the cats end up as successful ferals, the friendly ones come to the houses looking for a new home and I'll either keep them or find someone to adopt them, sometimes I find the taped up boxes of abandoned kittens too late to save them, and sometimes they end up as coyote food. All of my cats were dumps that I either found or they came to the house and found me.

The abandoned dogs sometimes "pack up" and start causing issues and harassing the neighbor's horses and goats. Just this week a roaming pack of 4 young-ish german shepherds showed up, they normally trigger the cameras between 11pm-3am and have been causing issues harassing the neighbor's livestock. The friendly dogs I find homes for or call a rescue that is well aware of the issues out here. I'd say 30-40% of the very friendly and very clean obviously recently dumped dogs are chipped, and the owners sound very awkward on the phone when the Sheriff's animal control officer calls them and says we found your dog.

Had this super sweet girl show up early this year during a light rain, she wasn't soaked and had zero mud on her legs or paws. Saw her on the cameras while I was running errands and found her sleeping on the lounge chair on the back patio. She was chipped, the address showed her home about 8 miles away in the center of town... there's no way she ended up 8 miles from home while still super clean and nearly dry if she had to walk through rain and muddy orchards unless she was dumped near the house. Sheriff went to have a talk with them after they sounded sketchy during the "we found your dog" phone call. I felt kind of bad when the animal control officer took her, because if she took them back to the owner on the chip chances are she got dumped off again.

dog2.jpg

We also get quite a few dead dogs dumped that were obviously used for fighting, tore up badly with lots of bite wounds and usually in a garbage bag or rolled up in carpet remnants or a tarp. While out shooting ground squirrels last Sunday I found another dead dog about 400 yards off the road in the walnuts. Had been there a week or so and was pretty ripe, no collar, no obvious fight wounds... no idea if it was dead when dumped or was dumped off and didn't survive.

We have cameras set up in the frequent trouble spots and have caught a few people in the act, and according to the Sheriff they were charged with animal abandonment and convicted.

Even though I know you can't save or find homes for them all there's absolutely no excuse for doing this crap, but it's very frustrating when all the shelters around here are overfull and not taking any more animals and the 2 clinics that do low cost neutering are 3+ months out for appointments for males and 6+ months out for appointments for females; makes it nearly impossible for the caring people who are short on money to get their pets fixed for a low cost, and makes it hard for others to do trap-neuter-release for feral cats and keep the feral cat populations in check when you can't get an appointment in a reasonable time. Some of the rescue organizations have standing appointments with the neutering clinic every two weeks and sometimes they have an open appointment you can use, but me having terrible luck every time I manage to trap a feral I can't get them into the clinic in a reasonable time and I can't keep them caged up for weeks hoping to get an available appointment.

And now for something even worse than just dumping them off out in the country-- the neighbor's son is an evening/night delivery driver for a warehousing and distribution company around here and 3 times just in the last 2 months he's seen people toss boxes of critters out of their windows onto the freeway while driving. One box of puppies and 2 boxes of kittens. I've read about that happening in the news from time to time but it's another thing to hear him talk about it and then show me the dashcam videos... really makes your blood boil. He stopped for all of them, unfortunately none of the puppies made it and most of the kittens didn't make it, but he managed to run out between traffic and snag 2 surviving kittens from one box and 1 kitten from the second box... unfortunately the rest got hit and didn't make it.

Here's one of the kittens the neighbor saved from one of the boxes dumped freeway they decided to keep... I suggested they name him Kitler for obvious reasons but they declined. Hope he doesn't invade Poland one day.

cat1.jpg

And a couple months later...

cat2.jpg

And here's the last dumped cat that we kept. Going to dinner one night and saw eyes glowing inside the orchard at the corner, stopped the car and called and she came running over, totally clean paws even though the sprinklers were on in the orchard... obviously not a feral and a fresh dump. Picked her up and she immediately started purring and wanting attention, drove her back home (was totally cool and unfazed with the car ride), and she immediately was friendly with the dogs and just wanted to snuggle with everyone. She's still super friendly with anybody, kills every mouse and gopher she finds, has caught 3 doves out of the wheat stubble just in the last couple of weeks (I told her it isn't dove season until September but she doesn't seem to care), follows you around to help with all the yard work, and is still good friends with the dogs. No idea how anyone could dump off a cat this cool. She went into heat about a week after we found her, so maybe they dumped her off because she was in heat and they didn't have the money to get her spayed... still not a good reason to dump her off outside of town.

This was right after getting back to the house after picking her up:

cat3.jpg

This was the next morning, totally relaxed even with a hyper lab puppy that wouldn't leave her alone:

cat4.jpg

And just a couple months later, friends with everyone.

cat5.jpg

Every evening her and the lab chase each other all over the yard. She'll wait around corners or hide in the bushes and ambush him and jump onto his back then jump off or box his head a few times and then run across the yard and up a tree and he'll follow, then repeat. A lot of the time if you throw a ball to the lab he'll take it to the cat and drop it in front of her and sit and stare at her wagging his tail instead of bringing it back to you, lol

Also, this deserves posting...

Must be black cat year. This little guy wandered into our yard a while back. He was probably 3-4 weeks old if that. Had a bad respiratory infection and probably wouldn’t have made it a few more days.

He managed to knock up our little russian blue cat the same week he got fixed.

His one and only surviving son. The other was breached and stillborn. Pretty sure he will be a smokey black

People who get cats and let them breed uncontrollably are just as bad as the dumpers. Someone in the neighborhood poisoned most of the cats we had spayed and neutered. Including the ones that had become our pets. We have two left that are inside cats now. One we have always kept inside. She showed as a pregnant kitten with one eye gone. Skull on the side is a little deformed like it was broken during the eye damage. She is uncoordinated and has bad depth perception. I think she got some brain damage.

A couple years ago we were at the vet with our cat. This little guy (he's older in this pic) was a at the vets office, a month or two old at the time. They told us some asshole had left a litter of kittens in the trash can outside of the vets office. He was pretty sick but we adopted him and named him Eddie Manetti. He is 7 now and living like a king.

There is a special place in hell for people that abuse pets.

I bet I see a half-dozen dumped animals per week. Irritates me to no end.

Fortunately some good people in the area have started working as fosters until we can get them fully vaccinated, and I have started working with some adoption agencies too.

It isn't just the "dumpers". There is a whole other group that refuse the $61 annual exam and vaccinations, or the $6-8/month heartworm prevention for their dogs. That takes too much away from their pack+ per day smoking habit while on government assistance... not to mention that they refuse to get anything spayed and neutered (which brings us back to dumping).

@sirhrmechanic I hope you have a good life with this one.

I need some advice. I adopted a lab pup around Christmas. He is 8 months old and is already 70 plus pounds. He is a handful and smart. I don’t know shit about training a dog properly. My wife about shits when I talk about sending him off for some basic training. I think it’s necessary. Thoughts?

Mistress Freya (grey) and Tyrone, Count Rougen (Black/White--guess how many toes he has!) approve of this thread. Tyrone was adopted as a kitten from the local shelter, Ms Freya was found abandoned near a trailer and rescued. All of her kittens were adopted before she was. Ms. Freya is my OSHA safety supervisor and makes sure I store all my chemicals and powder properly in the reloading room. Tyrone is our busy 3 year old who acts tough, eats all my socks (and food), but actually is a big chicken. Its his toys you see in the food dish.

Mr. Peter is the O(range)G. He was/is a native of Texas and was given up because he had an eye infection 15 years ago--I adopted him from the shelter as he was a Frisky Playful boi. In his retirement he enjoys WW2 History, 1911s, KRG Products, and possesing the high ground from overconfident kittehs. Not as fast as he once was. Still has guile.

All approve of this thread

RIP: Meesha--first adopted shelter cat. The original ball of hate! Olivander--the truly gangsta idgaf cat who was misgendered at the shelter. Catcher of rabbits and chicken sammiches. Mr. Peter misses his buds.

Apologies for the double: I know this isn't a big Harry Potter crowd, but the aforementioned "Olivander" was originally Minerva (I had Harry Potter aged kids at the time) and I always told my fam, the cat[wand] chooses you, not the other way around. When they called and said she was a he and did we still want to adopt, I told them, it didn't matter--the cat chose us! Thus he was renamed Olivander....

He still doesn't GAF!

Most areas have training classes and groups that you can join for training. Doing the training (at least initially) WITH your dog will have a ton of benefits. Not the least of which you will both understand each other.

For 'advanced' training if you are, for example, going to train as a gundog or for retrieving, etc.. then there are places that will be a great finishing school.

But for the initial training, ask at your vet or animal shelter who has dog training classes. Also go online and find a 'breed group' for your dog. And ask there about trainers in your area. There are a lot of folks out there who do classes and they are often very inexpensive.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Sirhr

I also have a reloading helper, although she's more of a process supervisor than a storage inspector.

I found her abandoned at only a couple weeks old taped up inside a paper grocery bag and left near the house. Once again, people suck. She's 10 now.

Here's how big she was when I found her. Not sure how long she had been inside the bag.

Word to the wise cat lovers:
Never go pheasant hunting in the upper Midwest with local yokles. Their animosity towards feral cats (and raptors) is legendary. I guess that's sort of a farmer/animal control thing, but I have stories...
My uncle was the same way. "THEY'RE KILLING ALL THE QUAIL!!" Never once saw him hunt or eat quail, and Iowa no shortage of them.

I would put lots and lots of money on the fact all my cats would kill me in my sleep.

One of them (he’s orange) would kill me anytime of the day. Apparently being orange makes cats a little “touchy”

And yet they don't kill us... Because until they evolve opposed thumbs, they can't operate a can opener or get into the food closet!

Though General Sherman opens doors with no problem. Little bastard. He also stole the key to my gun cabinet and 'lost' it under a carpet. It took me a month to find it. Literally pulled it out of the lock and buggered off with it.

Studies also show that cats love us... so must be a love-hate thing. Which is why they are more interesting than dogs. If not as useful!

Cheers,

Sirhr

Probably would benefit your and your wife's sanity to send him off to a reputable trainer for on and off leash OB and manners. Just be sure and do a thorough vetting of the trainer prior. They can be as sketchy as horse trainers, if not more so.
If you're in the Eastern part of the country, any of the Ridgeside K9 locations would be a good bet.

We live on a farm and always had cats around the house and a few have been house cats. Wife always adopted cats that lived in the school garden and couldn't count have many we adopted over the years. Besides those cats, others show up at our place and figure it a good place stay. My two inside cats are Pete and Minerva. The Angora is a strapping 18lbs but when we found him he was in bad shape not for the world. The tortoise shell was feral but decided life was better being civilized. Smart little shit. Anyway they follow me around the house where I go.

I totally agree with the sentiment about bringing justice to people who abandon or abuse pets. In a local animal shelter was a female Black Lab who could not be adopted out. Her owner was amish and poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. She learned the hard way to not trust amish people and she would become frightened and ferocious when she saw one. And they are not allowed to forbid adoption because someone is amish. So, she had no choice but to live her life alone in a cell but they kept her at the shelter for a while because at least having some home was better than nothing.

I know, ahead of time, that I could not be an Animal Control Officer. How could I help myself from "helping" a suspect off the ground. A few times.

Granted, ACO's don't actually arrest suspects.

In fact, I rarely go to the shelter, which is to donate food and old linens. I cannot care for all the lonely pets.

As much as I like purebred Siberian Huskies, if I were to get a dog, I know I would find one at a shelter. Our local shelter is $60 dollars for a dog. The dog is already up on vax. The price covers the adoption and spay or neuter at a participating vet clinic.

Could I find a Sibe at a local shelter? I have seen them there. And I once saw a Shiba Inu there, misidentified as a "Husky Mix." I explained to the worker there that this dog was a Shiba Inu.

He said, "A what?"

My point exactly. Those pups were $1,500 each. And yet, the homeowner could not be bothered to chip him and he gets caught and winds up at the shelter.

People suck.
