Night Vision Performance

I've never used NV but have family in GA which have issues w/ hogs & deer (like most private operations working the land). Bottom line is, what is a realistic expectation for say 750-1000 for a NV Scope? Is it a good idea to consider pre-owned? Are the brands or mfrs to avoid?
