Forgive me for asking... what is the purpose of teh flutted bolt... I know that flutes increase surface area and allow metal to cool faster but does the bolt really get that hot...
Or is it to shave weight from the rifle...
Once again I am sorry if this question seems silly, I just cant wrap my head around why some rifles like the Remingtons dont have a flutted bolt and other like teh Macmillan's do and again what the DSR's dont...

That was funny.
Fluting doesn't help with heat. It can help with dirt, can be more decorative, adds cost, can reduce weight if you are watching your ounces.

I understand so would I be wrong to say that for arguments sake it is simply an add on which could be argued as to doing something as well as to not doing something, I was thinking of ordering a TAC-308 from Mcmillan but already have a 5R-Milspec Rem 700 on its way and a Rem 788
Should round out the 308 collection nicely I hope lol

It has a benefit. It is up to you if you want it. I think it would increase resale value also. I think it depends on what you consider necessary. Putting a $5,000 paint job on a hot rod is a no brainer, putting it on your 85 Hyundai Excel? Not so smart.

As far as I'm concerned, fluting the bolt is mostly aesthetic. Yes, it does provide a channel for mud, dirt, grime, snow, etc. to go, but how useful is this? For me it isn't of any use since my rifles don't see that level of abuse.

I do still think it looks cool, though.

Of all the rifles I have owned over the years, only one even had a fluted barrel. And none have had a fluted bolt. My kids say I'm a stick in the mud.
