Over the last several years I have noticed a number of different accessory attachment systems beyond the traditional picatinny rails. The only obvious difference I can see is that the picatinny sticks out and the slot/ridge system can catch on stuff. Personally I have no experience with any other attachment system. Can anyone enlighten me as to the advantages of the other systems? Just curious.

The other attachment systems like Keymod and mlok provide the shooter with the ability to have a smooth and more comfortable handguard and to minimize weight. They do not seek to replace the picatinny rail - not yet, anyway. Used to be, we'd buy rail covers to create a more comfortable handguard to grasp. Manufacturers made handguards with picatinny rails the full length at 12, 3, 6 & 9 so that we could attach only what we want, exactly where we want it. The new systems allow us to do just that in a sleeker, slimmer and lighter way. It's a huge advancement, IMO. I'm about to ditch my last remaining picatinny handguard
