That's after Remington had gone from the hand checkering to the machine stamped checkering and the real, thick, high-gloss coating to make the stocks "look good", instead of the traditional hand rubbed finishes.

Cost reductions . . . .

I have one (700 BDL in 223) I used as a LE Counter-Sniper Rifle, I got in 1977 and carried it until I retired in 1994.

Turst me, we are both vintage. It still works, I don't (not if I can help it).
