Night Vision Pixels on Target Voodoo-S “Official” Horta Review and Other Stuff Thread

It was supposed to be here last week and I was hoping to have a full weekend to do some REAL testing, but the Evil Fargin’ Bastages over at FedEx have completely lost the concept of what “Priority Overnight” means. Hence, The Precious (the official name of the Voodoo-S, if you hadn’t figured that out already) just arrived this morning — ruining what was otherwise intended to be a glorious weekend.

So… without further adieu, some faux toes of My Little Pony:

Upon arrival, a number of other thermals surrounded The Precious while still in his amniotic sac. There was a LOT of butt-sniffing going on.

The Skeets were nervous, almost as if sensing that their years of monopoly may be coming to and end. One Skeet ran and hid behind his Big Brother (UTM-x) and suckled up to Big Momma (hiding behind a black elipse). The other Skeet was much more inquisitive, but was a little skittish.

Side-by-side, The Precious is both larger and heavier than Skeet, as you can clearly see, even though the Skeet-X has been around for about 7-8 years now and is based upon older 17um technology, whereas The Precious is built around the latest-generation 12um Military Series sensor. That said, The Precious packs a whole suite of MILnet tech inside that Skeet lacks entirely. Most of that tech will never be used by the CIV market but, like Prego Spaghetti Sauce, it’s in there.

While both units clearly share the same Oasys DNA, and fulfill a similar mission envelope, there are considerable differences — some where Skeet is the clear winner and others where The Precious drops the hammer.

I use dual Skeets exclusively as helmet-mounted binos. Strictly in that capacity, the Skeet is still King of the Hill. Nothing else comes close. For head/helmet mounting, the Skeets are just unmatched.

IF your “mission profile” includes weapon mounting or using as a clipon (up to 6x optical magnification), then the Voodoo-S lays a beatdown on the Skeet.

Aside from the TigIR-6M, no other clipon seems PERFECTLY designed to be paired with the 1.5x/6x Elcan.

The problem comes down to picking your poison. If you’re going to make a good clipon, it won’t be a great scanner. Looking through the Voodoo eyepiece is very similar to looking through the UTM-x eyepiece. It is a tunnel with some demagnification. It’s not as bad as a UTC or other dedicated clipon — like the TigIR-6M — but it straddles the difference like the UTM.

It still works great as a scanner, but the display looks much smaller when viewing them side-by-side on a helmet. The Skeet has an amazing, huge display that feels like it is wired directly into your visual cortex, like the image is being projected straight onto the back of your retinas. It looks and “feels” like no other unit that I’ve ever looked through.

That’s why I’ve been running nothing but dual Skeet “binos” for over 2 years now. It makes me feel like a plump version of Heimdahl. I can see *everything*.

PoT provides a very comprehensive guide to getting the best collimation to minimize POI shift with the Voodoo. It is FAR more comprehensive than anything BAE/Trijicon provides with the Skeet or UTM. They even include nauseating detail — literally to NINE decimal points (!!!) — for what each pixel represents in MILS and MOA.

That documentation is very welcome, but it’s exactly what I did with 320 Skeetir and 640 UTM. If architecture hasn’t been significantly changed, then the end result hasn’t either.

I’m hoping somehow it has.

Skeetir and UTM WERE useable, but I definitely had to be aware of shift and compensate for it. In some cases very significant. Additionally, each time I flipped the FTS mount out and back in, the shift from POA changed some.

For any real world use, that’s not acceptable (at least to me), so I’m hoping something has been done to address this.

I look forward to a fair amount of testing by end users to answer this. It may take a bit of time/ multiple users. If you recall, some users reported that the Tig was collimated, but further testing by more users determined that it definitely was not.

When companies like POT play secret squirrel with their marketing info, it’s up to early adopters to figure out what their product really is and is not capable of.

Totally different animals, honestly. It would be difficult to make a meaningful comparison. The Tig will outperform the Voodoo at longer ranges, because that’s its sole focus.

The tig is going to have more back end demagnification as it is a dedicated clip on. This being said... I think that this unit will out perform the tig for PID as it is focus adjustable and the Tig is not. On paper, the tig should be better, but my Super Yoter C blows my tig away in image clarity at distance.

But wait! There’s more! Team Twin Skeet still has a dastardly Big Bro in their corner — the reigning World Middleweight Title Holder who has crushed all contenders — so Team Twin Voodoo has conscripted America’s Only TigIR-6M to run their corner and keep an eye on Big Bro!

And wouldn’t you know it! Those nefarious Chicoms sent their Top Commie Spy Kung Fooey competitor — the infamous MH25 “ChinaSkeet” to infect our glorious champions with the Chynah Flu!

Well, this didn’t sit well with our pedigreed stable of World Class competition, so they each dismounted their trusty steeds and surrounded CoofSkeet to pulverize him into Chop Suey. The officials had to step in to keep the bloodletting inside the ring.

As the conflagration was broken up before it started, CoofSkeet could be heard mumbling something in Chinese as he walked away which, loosely translated, sounded like “Fark yoo Imperial barstages hoo corsst more dan fy time what I do —- harhahharhaaa we dance on yoo Captitarist grwave. Evidently the foursome didn’t appreciate the golden shower and gave the FedEx man a call. He stopped by my place this morning and brought a second Christmas.

Looking forward to getting many more pics and walking through the process of using as a clip-on on both short- and long-range setups. Let me know if anyone’s got any good ideas and I’ll try to make it happen while Uncle Horta is away.

One idea:

After “sight in”, remove from dovetail, remount, flip open then back in line, then check POI

Repeat a few times

Set ocular intentionally not perfect to simulate likely field/stress use. Induce parallax intentionally (within reason), and check POI deviation.

Check maximum range at which you can engage (with high hit percentage) a specific size target with remount/flip/reset ocular between shots.

Example: “85% first round hits on 8” plate at 250 yards”
