Places to start LR around Houston, TX

I know there are several ranges around Houston both public and private that have ranges out to the 600 yard mark or further, but I am not aware of good places to start getting into shooting these distances or comps.

On private land I have experience out to 300 yards and everything in between, but I have not gone further than this or had a area to practice freely. I believe American Shooting Centers allows you to test at 300 yds before moving up to the other ranges, but I am not certain.

Just looking for some possibilities to get out more and shoot something on a regular basis other than a pistol.

There are a group of Hide members that usually go out on Saturday morning to shoot at ASC's 600 yard line. There are also several other Hide members that belong to Bayou Rifles (the only 1k range in town)that I see out there every once in a while. I'm a member there too but don't shoot there too much anymore as shooting at paper gets to be a bit boring and hard to see where you are hitting at 600+.

You can always try to take a class at either Rifle's Only down south or Tiger Valley up near Waco.

I'm pretty sure you are correct about ASC & testing at 300 before you move out to 600. I don't really shoot there though as I have access to private land.

Come out to ASC on Saturday mornings and shoot steel at 600. You will have to qualify at 300, but that's not difficult. If you want to go further, you need to join us out at Bayou. You can shoot to 1000 out there. The F class matches there are well ran and the guys are great at making you feel welcome. ASC is obviously public, but Bayou is a private club. You don't have to be a member though to shoot the matches. You can find the schedule at www.bayourifles.com. The 1000 yd matches are scheduled for the first Sunday of each month, so there will be one next weekend.

ASC on saturday mornings huh. what time usually?

Lately i've been going to the best of the west 1000 yard range. very difficult with that kinda wind they have there.

Anywhere from 9 to 11. The earlier the better in the summer. PM me if you want me to let you know the next time I go out there.
