Re: planned parts for my build

You might be able to get a used McMillan off the for sale board here with less of a wait time, and may save some money. Unless there is something specific to the Mcmillan line (they make great stuff), you might also check out Manners stocks.

Depending on whether you plan on having anything done to your Remington 700 action (truing, blueprinting and so on) you might want to compare the cost of a ready made action from Defiance Machine, Surgeon, BAT, or similar companies. Some times, the end cost of the action, and machine work exceeds buying a ready made action that is already true to begin with. Plus, you can order any options you might eventually want, and end up saving money in the long run. Again, check the for sale boards here.

Kreiger and similar barrels usually go for around $350. Then you have to pay a smith to thread, chamber and install it. That can easily cost as much as the barrel if you have the muzzle threaded for a brake.

Don't forget to add in the cost of the finish you want on the rifle. Unless you want different colors, or an all stainless rifle, you will want to figure in the cost to have the rifle blued, cerekoted, or painted, tefloned, or finished by some method.

Once you start adding all of this up, it quickly becomes apparent that buying a ready made rifle from McMillan, or GA Precision isn't such a bad deal. Sure, they seem expensive, but if you realistically add up all the costs, they are quite cost effective. But there is much fun in assembling exactly the components you want in the way you want them assembled. It is spendy though...

If you are doing the work, that changes everything. Perhaps your course could teach you to blueprint the action..tremendous savings if you find an old action at a pawn shop or something like that.

I would still keep my eyes on the for sale section here. I bought a Manners T4 stock brand new for $500 with no wait...that was a steal of a deal.. mostly because I didn't have the wait. The fellow selling it just decided to go a different direction with his build, so it worked out perfectly for me.

In the corporate sales section here, Bughole is selling Obermeyer barrels. Obermeyer taught many of the top barrel makers in the country their trade, and his barrels are top notch. They are usually hard to get with a long wait. $300 + $15 for shipping for an Obermeyer barrel, and it is available now. The fluted barrels are around $400 plus shipping. He has various calibers available.

I really like the USMC, Nightforce, Seekins, Badger rings, but aren't sure that they hold the scope any better than the TPS rings that cost far less. Looks and style are valid reasons for buying a different brand though. Some people simply prefer a different look, or want to have the end rifle look more like the military rifles. The rings are a subtle difference though.

A few places I would recommend against scrimping if your budget will allow it is optics, a good trigger, you are already picking good barrel and stock so no issues there. Crummy optics can ruin an otherwise wonderful build and take a rifle that would have been an incredible shooter into a rifle you struggle to get results with whenever you take it out..same for the trigger.
