Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I was setting here tonight thinking about shooting my SH Tactical Match tomorrow and was looking over the target we use. I had an idea I'd like to share with those interested in our SH Comps, or just for anyone wanting to see what skill level they are shooting at. I put this target together from a piece of the SH 50 Yard Tactical Rimfire Target we use.

The scale can be seen to the right - marked in pencil. It's a staggard reduction target to be shot from 50 yards under the current SH match rules, with one shot at each target / 15 total shots in all.

Any thoughts on this? Any future potential here with this target. It naturally needs cleaned up, but I just wanted to get a feel for what folks thought. This target is on standard copy paper 8 x 11.5 inches...

Thanks!

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I think it would make a good target for our club's October 24th match, as one of the challenges from 50 yards.

I also just reduced the entire target page by 20% and I think it would make for a good 25 yard challenge for the lesser powered scopes - say 3-9x32 for example.

When I go to the range this morning I'll do a bit of testing on both targets, the one I posted here, and the 20% reduced one I just ran.

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I shot a couple of these targets this morning as I was looking for a good ammo combination for my Marlin 925, and they are harder then a person may think. The best I could do was a minus 20, and a plus 20, on two of these targets. Not so sure it could be used for much more then a training target for the Sniper's Hide 50Y TRC competiton, but if that's the case a person would be better off just shooting the 50Y TRC comp target to train with.

Maybe I'll use these in a local 25 & 50 yard match someday?

Here's a picture of the best score I made yesterday with this target. Not very good at all, only a +20...

Hey Joe, good idea on the 25 & 50 yd. training. Can only make
you a better shooter. Shooting at smaller targets will help
you in the long run.

Will you make this target available to print. I would like the
challenge.

Regards

Mark

Mark, I don't have a scanner (I use my photo-bucket account to post pictures), however - if anyone is able to copy and save this target to print they are more then welcome to do so.

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I think that would be pretty sweet at 50

I really like this idea. To be completely honest, I would probably shoot it more than the tactical one. We're getting a lot of new targets lately, and personally, I like that. There may not be as many people competing in the same match, but it allows the shooters to show off where they excell.

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

It's an interesting target to shoot, no doubt. I kind of lean towards the tactical target we're using now as it has more challenges to meet to post a good score.

On the other hand, the pure hostage target doesn't allow much room for a bad shot. If I were to make one scoring change to the target above I think I would add a "minus 10 points" if you miss the target completely;

Hit the bad guy in the 20 point box - [+20 points]
Hit the bad guy anywhere else - [+10 Points]
Hit the hostage - [-20 Points]
Miss the target completely - [-10 Points]

It would kind of force a person to make the shot and not lay up preferring to take a "0" points penelty for a complete miss of any one of the targets on the paper.

Just some added thoughts on this target...

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I like the idea of that pure hostage target. I'll try to print one out & see if I can shoot it & the other regular targets tomorrow morning.
The wind is pretty strong for a .22 today. I stoped by the gun shop on my way home awhile ago & picked up my new Savage MKII TR 17 HMR. I'll give it a good cleaning & oil it, mount the scope & get it leveled & bore sighted & hopefully I will have time before dark to run out to the farm & put some rounds down range. I ordered a 25 MOA mount earlier this week & it got here, so I guess I had better get busy getting the rifle ready to shoot.

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I think we need to work up a target for 50'. the weather up here sucks in Jan-March and our outdoor range is pretty much shut down those months it would be nice to have a comp setup for indoor shooting.Just my $.02

Made out to shoot the 17 before dark. 25 rounds of CCI 17 gr Varmint & 25 rounds of Hornady 17 gr VMAX. Took five rounds of the CCI to sight in the scope at 50 yds, then two five shot groups. Fifteen rounds of Hornady followed. Both brands just kinda' stacked on top of each other on the steel target. Then I went to 100 yds with two five round groups from each brand and they were good & tight, with the CCI showing a tighter group. I'll do some fine tuning tomorrow. In my haste to make it to the farm before dark, I forgot the mag & I didn't remember to put my USO scope level on the rail. Got that taken care of now. It really isn't too bad one-loading those 17 rounds though.

Re: Potential SH Target For Future Use?

I think Joe Martin's idea for a penalty for missing is a good idea. After all most likely a missed target in a hostage situation is often and dead hostage.
