Re: Powder for .338 LM

If you are looking for a temp stable powder check out Retumbo too. A few guys I know that know .338 quite well suggest it and use it with great results. Also, with that twist you may want to look into shooting the big 300gr projectiles.

H-4831sc is my go to powder out to 1k with 250 Scenars/SMKs in a 1:12" Sako TRG. ~86-88grs should be fine for about ~2825-2875 fps.

WORK UP in your own weapon.

Re: Powder for .338 LM

thanks Chris.. but, my twist rate is 1/10 ... is a problem with 250 grains bullets?

Re: Powder for .338 LM

My rifle is an AI AWSM in .338 LM 1 in 11 twist. My load is Lapua brass, Federal 215 primer, 90.5 grains of H4831SC and the Lapua Scenar 250 grain bullet. I am getting 2950 fps with this load and have found it to be quite accurate.

Re: Powder for .338 LM

It's always preferable to have a faster twist with a shorter (lighter) bullet, than to be stuck with a slower twist and a longer (heavier) bullet.

250s should be fine, but every barrel is different and you're the only one who can tell via loading them up and shooting them.

.338 is right, my gun loves VV-165 with the 250s, but it's a bit harder to find here and more money. I'd call it a toss up between the easier to find H-4831(sc) and VV-165, performance wise.

I also use VV-170 for a somewhat softer recoil impulse and H-1000 has done well in limited use. I have a can of RL-25, but I haven't fiddled with it.
