I have some 185, 200 and 210 grain bullets to try in my 308 F T/R rifle. I have tried some RL-17 and was not satisfied with the results. Any suggestions, with your experience would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

For the 185s run Varget. You should be able to start about 43.5 and work up. Pressure signs can start anywhere over 44.0. Depending you your chamber and how long you seat them.

Don't know what works with the rest

+++1 with "Down South" -
I've had awesome results, and continue too, with PP 2000 MR and heavy bullets. I use it in .223, .308 and 338-06.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I'd try 2000MR as well as my first choice. My second choice would be Reloader 15.

With Lapau brass, 190 SMK, and Federal match primers I get the following results.
41.5 Gr Reloader 15 - 2428 fps with excellent groups. No pressure signs.
46.3gr 2000MR - 2587fps with great groups as well with no pressure signs. My next load is 47 but, haven't shot it yet.

All shot with a 5R Milspec Remington with 24" barrel.

I have seen this as well in the newer lots of powder. I have an older lot that does not show these signs but am damn near out.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I tried some RL17 and 190s and was not impressed with the results. I went back to RL15, my go to 308 powder.

42.8 grains of RL15
Lapua brass
CCI 200
190 SMK
2.880 COAL
2615 FPS out of a 28 inch tube.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I was under the impression n550 has its temp issues as well, with a general trend towards the rube-heavies are powders like varget and re-15 going to work as well.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

N550 does have issues in my opinion. I can get good velocities out of it but I will never use it again in competition. It lacks the consistency I need with changing temperatures.

I've used Varget, N150, and H4350 with good results with heavier bullets.

I've seen too many people that try RE15 or RE17 and they almost always get good results in practice but that accuracy doesn't carry over to longer strings of fire at different ranges.

With a 175gr. bullet Varget or H4895 would be a much better choice. 4350 would be for 190 grain bullets and above.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I don't think you can stuff enough 4350 in a 308 case to get what you want from a 175gr bullet in a 308. For comparison, I'm dropping compressed loads at 48 grains of H4350 in my 7-08 and getting 2800 from 140s. As BESETbyAPOSTATES said, for 175s, and in my experience 185s use Varget. It will get you up in the 2700FPS range from long barrels and high 2600s in mid length w/o pushing the pressure too hard.

ok what starting charge weight for a 200 & 208 gr bullets?

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I bought 5 pounds of RL-17 in 2009. In 3 different rifles I was not able to best 1 moa consistently at 300 yards much less 1,000 yards. This was with 190SMK, 200SMK, 210SMK and 210 Berger LRBT. I have had good luck with RL-15 with the 190SMK. I have the remains of an 8 pound jug of Varget that I have been working on for about 9 or 10 years that I should have used for fertilizer, must have been from a crappy lot I could never get it group well. It made me a little gun shy to spend more hard earned money on Varget.
I have had very good luck with 155 & 175 with H4895.
I have about 1,200 heavy match bullets I would like to use other than having them fire a shotgun pattern. I will pick up a pound of H4350.

Re: Powder for heavy bullets in 308 Win?

I wont give load data because the 200-230s are loaded very long. This allows more powder in case and if you tried to stuff a mag length round with that much powder you would have HUGE ISSUES

In short just look on line and SLOWLY work your way up.

I have to manage the N550 far more than N150 for sure. I will shoot N550 in string fire when I have control of when I fire but not team.

N150 and Varget is great for 175-185s

N140/N540,varget and h4895 are great for 155s
