Powder Shortage?

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I've been wanting to buy some powder so I can start some reloads, and it seems everywhere I look (i.e. Powder Valley and Midway) they're all out of Varget, H4895 and RL-15. What gives? Is this normal because they're so popular?

It will take constant shelf checks to get lucky on the popular powders. Don't give up and keep trying them all every few days.

Even before he was sworn in there was a sustained run on primers, powder, AR's, etc. I see lots more availablity on everything now. Just keep watching Powder Valley, Mid South, Midway, etc. and buy big when you get a chance. Good luck

Put it on backorder at a couple places. First one in, cancel the other. Or, my preferred method, take both and when one container runs dry, order another.

Also check Natchez, Third Generation Shooting supply and Grafs and sons.

You can also look for equivalent powders like - AR2208, Varget, IMR4064, and AA2520. I do that sometimes to get around the very popular powders. If you look hard and set you alerts for all of the sites that you shop and also look locally and you local shops you will find it. It just takes due diligence these days.

I ordered 5k BR match primers from powder valley recently though it said out of stock. Suprisingly they showed up the next week. It had taken 31/2 months earlier in 2009 so i was thinking i was ording for the future. Anyway, point being, i would just order so you get on the list. You might get lucky and it will come in fast but if you wait to see it online "in stock" you may be waiting for a long time because they are basically selling out every time anything comes in.

Yep. I've never reloaded before, so I've never tried to buy powder!

I'm finding everything in stock at Gander Mountain. A little pricier but still cheaper than buying decent factory ammo.

Check wal-mart, been getting Varget for 22.99 at the local supercenter, on the shelf everytime I check.

Alot of folks are hoarding if you shoot 200-500rds a year why buy 5-10k primers or 32lbs of powder

Try Ramshot TAC or AA2230. I had to switch away from Varget due to lack of availability. The above two have the great virture of being available even during the massive run on supplies.
