Precision Build Dilemma...

I have been contemplating a medium range build for a while now and have had a hard time pulling the trigger on anything...

I just want something to slap steel from 300-800 yards, This will be my first centerfire precision rig. I have a Savage 93R17TR In .17hmr that I have blasted the hell out of and learned a lot from.

I am looking to eventually spend around $1.5-1.8K NOT including optic (I already have a MK4 4.5-14 that will go on either rig).

I have been reading how people have been building .5-.75MOA AR rigs within my price range, and find that impressive from a gas gun! I was first thinking 6.5 Grendel, but I dont reload and figured for my distance, and factory match ammo, I should go .223

So my first instinct was to build an SPR, here is how I priced it out:
Lower: 100
LPK without trigger: 60
Geissele trigger: 220
PRS Stock:260
Billet upper:180
BC:100
Rainier arms Ultramatch barrel (Shillen blank)with matching bolt: 450
Free float rail:200
Muzzle device:100-150
Harris bipod:100
Gas block:70
Total: Around $1,900 give or take $100 depending on rails, trigger, stocks, etc

The other option is a Rem 700 in .308, again, for my distance and factory loads. Here is how I priced it out:

Rem 700 $550 with rebate
B&C Stock 250
Wyatts DBM: 250
Timney trigger: 130
Shillen bbl: 360
20 moa base:100
Bipod: 100
Total: $1750 give or take $100

Neither build is absolutely top of the line, but for a starter rig, what do you think? They should be capable of sub MOA at 100, and that all I really need for the time being.

Yes, I know the gas gun may be harder to shoot and less forgiving and .223 is not ideal.

Any insight is appreciated. If my budget numbers are way off, let me know!

Thank in advance.

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

I'd do the 700 in .308

Honestly with all the stuff your replacing on it, you might not even need to replace the barrel. I'd do he rest see how it shoots and then go from there.

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

i agree 308 but i would go with the medalist stock its an extra few bucks but you have cheek and butt-stock adjustable option, it come in really handy i didnt think it was worth it but after having one i wouldn't buy a straight stock agin

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

Check out my "should I buy it" post.
700 SPS Tactical
Bell and Carlson stock
CDi bottom metal (from a user standpoint, don't buy Wyatts. Mags are not all identcal in dimension, so some may not fit, others are sloppy. At the VERY least, buy a CDi and have Jeff inlet your stock. Way better option. That, and Jeff is a site sponsor, Wyatts is not.)
TAB sling
Warne 20moa base
NF 3.5-15x50
results at 100 yards. Just mmy.02. YMMV

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

Thanks for the reply's! I am set on the bolt gun now!

I will not be able to make all the purchases at 1 time, so I will leave the barrel as the last part and see how it shoots with the factory barrel.

I did not know that about Wyatts DBM! And since the CDI is the same price, that one is a no brainer!

Thanks for the help!

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

Stevens 200 action - 235.00
CBI barrel in 308 - 290.00
HS Precision - 400
SSS ACME - 160.00
20moa base - 45.00

That should bring you in well under your budget.

PM if you have any questions.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

If i were you, I'd try and find a Rem 700 SPS and sell off everything but the action if you wanted to save a lil dough. If you can find one for about $500, sell the trigger fro around $50, the stock and bottom metal together for $100, and the stock barrel for $50 and walla you have a $300 Remmy instead of a $550 Remmy!!

Re: Precision Build Dilemma...

I think the bolt gun is a very good choice for mid-range and farther out.

If you had wanted to go the AR route, you might look at White Oak Armament. They have top notch barrels, and other parts, or you could go with one of the complete uppers and come in hundreds less than your price breakdown above.
