I know the shooting hand firmly pulls the rifle into the shoulder, but do you concentrate on just one or two fingers bringing the rifle back? And is the pressure constant or does it increase just before firing?

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

I use a sling to push the rifle butt into the shoulder, not the hand. The hand should be firm but not death like. The tighter you grip the rifle with your shooting hand, the more likely you'll disturb the rifle when you squeese the trigger.

Try this:

Take a piece of paper and draw a line down it. Now take two rifle shells and stand them up on the line. Grip one with your hand as you put your trigger finger on the second. Try to draw the second shell down the line, keeping it on the line while gripping the first shell.

Grip it lightly and draw it back. Get a good have grip on it and try to draw the other shell back, keeping it on the line.

You'll see the difference.

This works with pistol/revolvers too.

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

The shooting hand applies enough pressure to keep the rifle into the shoulder pocket. It's not a death-grip, and it's not free recoil either. It doesn't change. Consistency is key.

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

I like to describe it as the middle, ring and pinky fingers applying pressure to the rear, just to snug the butt against the shoulder. It's NOT a GRIP, the thumb should not be involved. I like the thumb to lay on the side of the hand, pretty much pointed at the target area and dead, no tension at all.

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

Unfortunately we’re often not allowed to shoot slung.

Major John L. Plaster mentions in his book focusing on using his bottom two fingers to apply rearward pressure when pulling the trigger.

Has anyone here from a military background been instructed to shoot like this?

Also is rearward pressure pulling the rifle into the shoulder constant and not increasing during trigger pull?

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

I was an SDM and fielded an M24 in Iraq and I was never taught anything regarding the shooting hand grip (no formal sniper training), but I do use the technique you describe. I treat it a lot like my golf grip - pressure coming from my middle and ring finger mainly, enough to keep it secure but not enough to affect my index finger. On my bolt rifles I generally shoot with my thumb along the side of the grip which is also a lot like a golf grip.

Regarding rearward pressure, I keep it constant.

Re: Pressure from the Shooting Hand

When in prone, I use my non firing hand to push the rifle into my shoulder while manipulating the rear bag. This works very well on AR's. For bolts with no hook on the stock I use the sling in the same manner.

My firing hand has just enough pressure to keep it in position during recoil.
