I have brass for the 454 that has primer pocket for both small and large rifle primers. When shooting the brass with small rifle primers, on occasion, I'm getting some perforated primer with loads that are below max. Has anyone had good experience with a particular brand of small rifle (magnum?) primers.

Is your question about piercing primers or about people's 'good experience' with a brand of primer? Or, maybe you are assuming that the piercing problem is caused by the brand of primer?

I own two FA-83's in 454 Casull. I have used the 7 1/2 Remington 100% of the time w/o any problems at all. Give them a try. You didn't mention what you were shooting the 454's in but in the FA revolvers as well as a Bullberry 454 Casull Encore barrel I have seen no reason to change from the 7 1/2's.
