I've put pistol ammo together with dinged primer cups and not had ignition problems. I little debris on the primer ram will cause this.
To clarify the crimp: It appears as a depressed ring around the primer pocket. When you come across a piece of brass that doesn't want to take a primer correctly, decap that piece and inspect the primer pocket. On NON military style cases, there will be a slight radius that serves as a nice "lead-in" for the primer. Military style crimped cases will have ZERO lead in. Ive never tried the paperclip technique - so i dont know if that is legit, but ill take their word for it. Imagine how difficult it would be to get a primer started if: after the last primer was installed, a staking tool was used to pinch the casehead down onto the primer as extra insurance the primer wouldn't pop out - that's a military crimp.
