I started loading 9mm.I noticed that sometimes the primers get jammed up and the primer seating area needs to be cleaned up.It turns green from the primers. What could be the reason for this happening?I get some primers that are dented a little,is this a problem?Should I redo them or just shoot Them?

Re: primers

What type of brass are you using?
Are original primers crimped in?
What type of press are you using?

Some pistol brass comes with crimped primers and that crimp must be reamed or swaged off.

Spilled powder granules or other crap getting on to the primer ram will dent the primer. If you are trying to ram a tilted primer into the case it will often be damaged.

Re: primers

There is a crimp ring around the base of the primer. Some of your scrounged brass is certain to have them. New primers will not fit in the primer hole unless the crimp is removed.

If you can't see them you can hook them with a paper clip. If there is a step at the mouth of the primer hole, that is a crimp.

Re: primers

I've put pistol ammo together with dinged primer cups and not had ignition problems. I little debris on the primer ram will cause this.

To clarify the crimp: It appears as a depressed ring around the primer pocket. When you come across a piece of brass that doesn't want to take a primer correctly, decap that piece and inspect the primer pocket. On NON military style cases, there will be a slight radius that serves as a nice "lead-in" for the primer. Military style crimped cases will have ZERO lead in. Ive never tried the paperclip technique - so i dont know if that is legit, but ill take their word for it. Imagine how difficult it would be to get a primer started if: after the last primer was installed, a staking tool was used to pinch the casehead down onto the primer as extra insurance the primer wouldn't pop out - that's a military crimp.

Re: primers

Yes its powdery,I have about 2000 cases,I noticed most of the cases that the primers were a brass color were the ones doing it.The silver ones came out and new ones seated fine.So I'll pass by them for now and come back to them. Thanks to all
