I tried to mount my 3-9 SS on my AR this morning and ran into a problem. I can not mount it because the diopter adjustment comes into contact with my rear sight(YHM/flip-up). I am using the Larue SPR 1.5.
I have come to the conclusion that I have 3 options to choose from that may solve this problem. 1.Remove the rear sight when I want to use my SS. 2.Purchase a new rear sight that affords me the clearance(if such a sight exists). 3.Purchase a riser for use with my SS/Larue.
My question is from these options, which one makes the most sense? Or, does anyone have any other suggestions? Ideally, I would like the iron sight to stay put.

Thanks

Re: Problem: Super Sniper 3-9 mounted on AR15

The most important question for figuring this out is: "When was the last time you ACTUALLY USED your BUIS?"

I only ask because I am constantly seeing people hanging them off of their rifles and NEVER actually using them. They just sit there, most of the time people never actually bother to zero them or ensure that they work properly on their particular setup, they take up space and/or interfere with proper mounting of optics, cost you addt'l weight and are more or less mall-ninja accoutrements that people THINK they need and when they really don't. That said, unless your situation differs and you actually use your BUIS, remove them, run your optics and be done with it altogether.

If you actually use your BUIS or really want them, then I'd swap out the YHM (which are TALL compared to other options on the market) with something that will fit under the SS's eyepiece. Just to give you an idea...the YHM BUIS are generally around 0.84-0.85" tall. I don't know how much clearance you have or what will necessarily work best for you, but here are just a few options that may/may not work:

ARMS 40L (any of the "L" models) - 0.61"
Troy - 0.47"
Midwest Indus. SPLP - 0.44"
KAC Micro - 0.32"

Ditch the BUIS or get a lower profile one. Don't go monkeying around with your optic set up just to make a rear sight work. Try the Troy or KAC sights.

Re: Problem: Super Sniper 3-9 mounted on AR15

I have the GG&G MAD BUIS and have used the GG&G A2 rear flip up.

Right now I'm running the MAD with my SS 3-9 in the GG&G FLT QD mount with no issues.

Measure or look up the center of ring height of your mount. Take 1/2 the diameter of your ocular on the scope and subtract that from the ring height. Whatever you have left is the distance from the bottom of the ocular to the top of the rail. If you get a BUIS that is less than this amount you should be good to go.

ORD pretty much summed up my thoughts, but I'll add one more. Why cause your cheek weld to be that much higher by adding a riser simply to accommodate an overly tall BUIS? From a marksmanship standpoint that doesn't make any sense at all.

Replace the YHM or ditch it all together.

Re: Problem: Super Sniper 3-9 mounted on AR15

Problem solved. ORD: A local shop had a Troy sight that allowed the clearance I needed. I like shooting irons from time to time so I want to keep them. I didn't realize the YHM was so tall. The YHM functions just fine but it's huge compared to the Troy. Redmanss: I had the same thoughts regarding cheek weld. 2rsquared: I've been thinking of a setup like that in the future. I like the speed they afford but I don't have the time for 3-Gun at the moment. College, work and shooting USPSA at the local club are keeping me busy at the moment. I'm glad things worked out. There is plenty of clearance now. Thanks everyone again for the input.
