Gunsmithing Problem With BM Inlet In New McMillan Stock

I finally got my McMillan stock I ordered in November and I have to say it was worth the wait. The problem is the V Bull bottom metal for my Savage protrudes a little from the stock and there is a little over .125" up/down play in my 5 round AICS mag. The bottom metal sticks out an equal .125". It does pick up a round, but not by much.

Is it common to have this much play? I was planning to take it to my gunsmith to have it bedded and he was telling me it is not uncommon to have to adjust the fit of the bottom metal.

I emailed Terry Cross to thank him on the quality job he did on finishing up my stock and mentioned my problem. His reply was if my gunsmith is competent enough to fix it maybe go with that or send it back to McMillan and they should fix it at no charge. I ordered the stock though JW Precision and am still waiting for a reply back from John.

So whats your opinion on what should be done? The more I think about it I think I should send it back to McMillan, but I really would like to get shooting again soon.

Re: Problem With BM Inlet In New McMillan Stock

One of the problems with most all of the DBM floorplate conversion units is that they must be set at a specific distance from the bottom of the receiver in order for the magazines to lock in place and feed properly. Some of the units, like the Badger M5 floorplates come with a set of pillars cut to the proper length to set this spacing and we inlet the stocks to that distance wheather they look good on the bottom or not. If you set the floorplate deeper to look good in the stock then the magazine may not lock into place or if you set them higher to look good then they may not feed. There just is not a lot of play room here and still get proper function.
The V-Bull floorplates come with a diagram which gives you the dimensions to set these floorplates at for proper functioning and that's what we have been inletting the floorplates to. On our tactical stocks they set quite high above the bottom of the stock when set to these depths, and we have recently had several complaints that they are not working properly.
I have several calls in to Mr. Beggs to see if we can work this problem out but have not heard back from him yet. Until we get it solved we will, for now, decline to inlet for these floorplates. I'm sure when Ed gets back he and I will be able to figure this out, and if any of you have stocks inletted for this unit please send them back and we will see what we can do.

Yes it is! Never had anything but good dealings with those folks. I told brother Slickrick0999 a few days ago that if it were not for McMillan stocks, I would probably buy nearly as many rifles.
