I posted this on rimfirecentral, but I know we have some knowledgeable people here, and wanted to ask you all...

My Remington 40XB has been great so far, but recently I started shooing Wolf Match ammo, and this weekend it ended up being difficult to chamber, and was running near 100% extraction after about 150 rounds.

I assumed it was just a very dirty chamber, and waited till i got home to clean it with a nylon brush.

However, after cleaning it's still hard to chamber, and extraction is 100% broken.

I am always diligent to ensure at least an empty piece of brass is in the chamber to stop anyone from dryfiring it, but I do see a slight firing pin mark on the face of the barrel, above the chamber.

Can anyone offer some suggestions on what to look for? I thought cleaning the chamber would do it, but no joy.

This is a Rem40XB, with a bolt from PTG, and has been great up till this weekend. Prior I was shooting primarily bulk ammo, copper washed stuff, not this match grade pure lead projectile.

I took the bolt out and was able to rotate it and see how far out the firing pin came, but it was pretty much flush with the bolt, so it should not be hitting the breech.

The bolt face is clean, and although there is a slight catch for the right extractor claw, when I put a round on the bolt face, the extractors hold it right, so I think they are doing what they need to do.

Right now a Hoppe #9 soaked patch is sitting in the chamber and I will clean it again in a bit to see if any residual wax is causing a problem.

Thanks for the help all!

Cheers!

Onyx

EDIT:

Thanks for the help guys.I spent some time on the chamber, and the area right in front of the chamber, and ordered in a "chamber Iron". The iron helped alot (I think someone dry fired my rifle, leaving a nice little burr.), as did the cleaning.

Now the only issues I have is when I try to eject unfired match ammo. (the long nose is getting engraved on the lands, and making it stick for a bit.) That works for me!

Cheers!

Re: problems with my 40XB

My CMP 40X had difficult extraction with SK/Wolf as well. I just polished the chamber with oiled 0000 steel wool on a 22 brush. You can use an old section of rod from a cheap cleaning kit and a drill to do this.

You'll have to build the steel wool up after a bit as it wears down.

Also on match 22 pistols it is not uncommon to have to run an oily chamber to keep them functioning. A little smear on the brass every so often may be needed to keep yours running.

Re: problems with my 40XB

Thanks guys! I believe it is a match chamber from what I have been told.

Polishing it up might be a good plan, I will look into that. It definitely likes the match grade, raw lead rounds the best, so want to be able to keep those going.

Cheers!

Re: problems with my 40XB

You may be starting a little bit of a lead build up just in front of the chamber.
Get some Shooters Choice lead out and use it, Hoppes will only do so much with lead build up.
Do like 9H said and that should take care of it if in case it is a build up.
I use a nylon brush instead of bronze.

Re: problems with my 40XB

I would not use Steel wool in the barrel. I would use the wires from a disassembled "chore boy ?" copper scrubbing pad (don't remember the exact name off of the top of my head). Make sure the get a pure copper one. This is a well known trick used by those in the high power lead shooting community. The copper will not damage your bore and lead will "adhere" to copper. The steel wool will scratch your bore and wear it down possibly damaging it.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't either - that's why I'm suggesting using it in the CHAMBER.

EDIT TO ADD - I've used steel wool many a time in a "frosty" bore with no problems. Barrel steel is pretty tough stuff.
