I basically came up with my own process for reaming chambers for belted magnums on the Remington 700. Its worked so far. Can someone who is smarter than me please tell me if this is the best/prefered way to do it?

#1 Thread barrel tenon for receiver.
#2 Cut recess for bolt nose. Receiver/bolt should now fit.
#3 Cut recess for belt. Use headspace gauge for depth. Bolt should now close on chamber with Go gauge.
#4 Ream chamber and use dummy cartridge to inch up on final depth.

Is there a better way? The majority of my work is rimless and headspacing with a shoulder headspace gauge. Not off the belt.

Does your reamer have the belt ground in it or not,,,,most come with the belt ground in it so you would cut every thing at one time and headspace with a belted head space gauge, thats how I would do it,,,,the case will fireform to the chamber after that.

No, I have the PTG reamer, which is a straight walled reamer. Hence why I was cutting the belt with the boring bar.

Good luck.

Ps: one stop shopping at PTG. </div></div>

I'm glad I asked. I wasnt even aware there were headspace gauges for belted magnums that would go off the shoulder. I'll have to check with PTG. They must have two types, when I originally ordered the 300WM headspace gauge, they sent me the belt one. Thanks.

Oh... they shoot so much more consistent headspaced on both the belt and shoulder. So much better.
