I got a buddy a psa lower for Christmas, his first ar. He wants my help picking an upper. PSA has 16", mid gas mloc for around $300. Main use will likely be shooting turtles, otters and yotes. Is there another upper in similar price range as psa that he should look at? Should he consider getting just the upper from psa and a different brand BCG? Thanks.

The PSA should be just fine for his first AR.

I would say for the money PSA is a good way to go. I have a PSA total build and I’m not going to say it is a bug hole gun but more than adequate for a hunting. There are not many critters that run in front of the barrel that don’t end up on the ground.

PSA is excellent. Most parts are the overruns from FN. The BCG is GTG. If you want a better barrel opt for the CHF version. Those are FN barrels.

I know that they were running a daily deal recently for a 16” 1/7 twist nitride barrel free float upper with bcg and all parts needed for a build minus lower for 300. If he already has a complete lower this will give him an entire spare parts set with an upper for 300. Get the nickel boron bcg too. The price is right at 89 bucks.
