Due to time constraints, last winter I got into night hunting coyotes in central Illinois. I purchased a 203 Simrad, and until now I was scanning with my rifle. I ordered an XM38 from Scott Eby. This is my first go with thermal, but I am extremely pleased. I was hoping to be able to detect heat anywhere within a mile section, and use it to scan while on stand. From what I can tell this is going to work great for both. It’s not much bigger than my sig kilo 2400, which was a big draw for me. If any of you have advice on how to optimize this thing, or questions about features or quality feel free to chime in.

I took it to check cows last night. On the way I stopped on the creek bank where I cut hay yesterday and watched a coyote at 400y+ The first 2 pictures were taken from opposite sides of a one mile section. I was able to keep track of him all the way around. The picture of the pasture was 700+y. And the lone speck was one of two foxes that dens up on the back side of our 80 at around 900y. I would say there is at least a 25% degradation in image quality from what I see on scope, and the uploaded images, these were mainly to show the detection capability. I would assume that a warm critter will stand out much better when it’s not 85* and 100% humidity.
