Weighing options on buying an older PWS Summit or a NIB Volquartsen Summit.

Is there a meaningful difference between the two? Any cautions on either I should be aware of?

The items in question would be otherwise similarly equipped.

I never got my PWS Summit to shoot that well. The action worked great, but my groups were pretty crappy.

Do you think it was a barrel quality issue?

I've got two barrels to go on it. A McGowan stainless 1:9" with a Bentz chamber for SSS and a YHM integrally suppressed barrel. If I could find a clean action at less than absurd prices with all the bits, I'd just do that. Or a 17HM2 barreled action. So far, nothing.

I'm not sure what the issue was to be honest... it was just the factory PWS Carbon Fiber Barrel. I mean it wasn't worse than a 10/22, but it was no where near as nice as like my Tikka T1X or CZ 457 in terms of groups.

If you're going to be running a non semi-auto no reason to have a Bentz chamber. Could have a nicer match chamber.

It's the barrel that was available at the time. Not as many off the shelf options for Summit rifles in any case.

I've put off getting either a 10/22 (or clone) in hopes of finding a good deal on a Summit. Seems like they cone up occasionally and this isn't exactly a 'need' per se.

My PWS was ammo picky with their barrel on it. It was would shoot 1 MOA at 50 yards but only with ammo it liked.

If it was me I would pick one up only if it had the PWS trigger in it. My PWS trigger was amazing.

Then I would get a VQ summer to swap the trigger into :)

That's a helluva rig! What stock is that? Looks serious.

I'm leaning toward a biathlon/offhand stock for precision position shooting and a modest optic with enough adjustment to make good hits out to 200 yards.

THANK YOU sir! the stock is BELL AND CARLSON Anschutz style. BTW this IS ALSO RECEIVER BARREL THREADED TOGETHER and bypass the VBLOCK.For stable shooting BY professional gunsmith work.Good luck.

No experience with the Volquarten, but I am really happy with my PWS including the factory barrel and trigger. It hangs in there with my 77/22 with a Shilen match barrel. I'm a fan of the Victory Titan stock for Summits, seems like a natural fit. The huge surprise is the PWS trigger. I'm not sure if it is as good as a Kidd or a Brimstone-tuned trigger, but it is really nice. I could not get the PWS trigger would not work on any of my 10/22 type receivers. Would not reset the hammer.

I have a PWS Summit receiver/trigger with a 16" KIDD barrel in a Victor stock. Can't say I remember what the group size was but Richardson ground squirrels were easy hits all the way out to 150yrds. Always used CCI SS HP . The trigger is quite good when set correctly. I like it so much I just purchased a second receiver only that will arrive Monday. Previous owner had extraction issues and sent it back to PWS couple years ago. Never used it again. Been sitting around till now. Not sure how it'll go together just yet but considering a 17hm2 or possibly a tight chambered "Stinger" barrel.

Anyway. I would say the VQ is a good choice for buy and shoot or get a PWS for much less and build what you want. You should be pleased with either.

    Thanks, that's great advice!

Been considering the merits of the 17 HM2 actually.

Is the switch between barrels particularly challenging?

I just happen to learn the Volquartsen took over the PWS Summit. I was a bit surprised.. Shows how well I'm keeping up with things.
Any case I have a PWS and I probably would recommend getting the Volquartsen unless you want to do some work to get the PWS working fine.
I had to sand the bolt a bit to keep it from gouging the rounds. I had to bend the extractor so it would retain the shell casing. It wouldn't hold the shell casing and would just drop in the chamber. Drove me crazy. If you cycle fast then it might be okay. By bending teh extractor (which is also a Ruger 10/22 trick I read about) it has a solid hold on the brass. I forgot what else I did, but those are the main ones off the top of my head.

If your not shooting suppress I'd say get something else.. but if you want quiet shooting suppressed, the Summit definitely works great.

I never shot my factory pws carbon barrel for accuracy. It's been great on the kids blaster 10/22.

I immediately swapped for a Feddersen 16" and have been quite happy. The barrel seems a bit picky lot to lot even. But, 22s.

I didn't start having success with groups until I filed and polished the sharp edges on the bottom of the bolt. They were badly gouging the bullets. Easy fix for a great gun.

    It shines with a can.
