Wishing I was back in MT
I have muzzle break that I need installed on a 20" varmint AR barrel. My smith is strickly a bolt gun guy and doesn't want any part of threading the barrel for the break. Can anyone please recommend a a quality smith in or close to MT that specializes in the AR platform? Shipping is outrageous these days.

It's a bit of a drive and I sure hope you're not in a hurry, but Dave Young up in Tracy does damn good work. It's been a while so I don't have contact info for him but I've had a few guns worked on by him and can vouch for the quality of his work.

I've had Randy Melvin (Bull Mountain Rifle Co) and Dave Hellickson (Dave's Custom Shop) do great work for me. However, both were on bolt guns, so not sure how either feel about ARs. I'd imagine they'd still do great work. Dave's turn-around time was far quicker, and work was done equally as well.

I can also vouch for Dave's work. I just couldn't remember his last name. You are right on the turn around time too.

Dave is who built my. 338 Edge and did an awsome job. Precision returned my email stating:

"I wouldn't feel real comfortable installing a break on that barrel. The crown on that barrel is a little different than most and when cutting a new crown would be guessing what would be the best cut to make on it. Could take a good shooting barrel and make it not so good.

Sorry cant help with that barrel there may be someone else that would know about the right crown for it. Only option I would have is a new barrel."

Does that make sense? You guys tell me, it is a DMPS Arctic Panther and the Brake is a SJC Titian requiring a 1x28 thread. Don't crowns get cut at somewhere between 11 and 16 degrees?
