Quality vs Quantity

When I was younger, I purchased quite a few rack grade rifles in a variety of calibers and brands. I liked the idea of having a set up for each little niche I might want to explore.

I'm now at a point where most of what I own rarely gets shot and just sits in the safe, so I have given some thought to consolidating. I sold several hunting rifles to fund the purchase of a JP LRP-07. Now I'm wondering about the two Rem 700 VSSF rifles I have (223 & 308). Are those simply redundant with the LRP-07? Would you look at selling/trading on a precision 223AR or possibly a better 308 bolt gun?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Quality vs Quantity

I was telling someone today that I own my least number of guns in a long time. However the value of my collection is higher than ever. I'm a quality over quantity guy 100%.

Keep the 223 bolt, they are nice to have. Save for an AIAE MkIII that you can switch from 308 when you get bored with it to a 243 or 260. Then buy a 16" battle rifle AR, you don't need a precision AR. Arsenal complete.

Thanks for your input. I think I'm well covered on 16" 5.56 ARs with a Colt 6920 and KAC SR-15. I agree that the precision 223 AR may be of limited use. The downside of the 223 VSSF is the 1:12 twist. I'm not a varmint hunter, so the light bullet limitation isn't ideal.

For many years I made-do with one 30-06 bolt gun and a precision AR.

If the .223 bolt gun isn't a 7-twist you don't need it.

.308 semis are more of a limitation than most people realize, and the larger platform is awkward compared to a .223.

Get an AE MK III in .308. Build a precision AR 7-twist in .223.

Then later you may or may not need a 7mm Mag of some sort for very long range and/or a .22LR if you use one.

Agreed with everything but this part!

I see me never needing a "battle rifle" since a precision AR can do double duty and a "battle rifle" cant!

See I'm more of a two birds one stone type of guy!

Also good on the long range hunting front with a 300WM Browning. Have several .22s. Working on the target/tactical stuff. I kind of see the limitation to owning a bunch of precision rifles as my inability to afford a bunch of high end optics. Fewer rifles=better scopes.

Well then I say just sell the bolt guns in question and get the AI AE MkIII in 308 and order a 243 barrel when they get more in. The barrel change is EASY to do at home with $200 in tools.

Call Mile High, they'll get you started. Buy the TBAC barrel wrench any of the decent $60-75 barrel vises. Rock on.
