Quantico Vintage Precision Rifle Match - Pictures

I was an RSO for the two day event and took some pictures I thought I'd post. I probably should have shot, but I'm not sure I want to shoot my A4 with a M73B1 and old eyes. But after attending and getting the itch, I may have to build a 1941A1 or a M40A type clone! Those of us in the Quantico/NoVA area (Mil and Civ) are fortunate to have weekend access to the ranges for Rec Fire through the Quantico Shooting Club (who put on the match). The event was well attended and represented with 1941A1s, A4s and a Swiss M96.

A number of guys from the Precision Weapons Section came out, bringing some M40A1s they took out of the vaults and people were shooting M40s up to A5s. CMP rules apply, but we're a bit looser allowing the M40s, and we did let a couple of guys shoot modern for some practice.

Day one was 300 and 600, and they extended the match to day two for those wanting to shoot 800 & 1,000. We even had a very special guest come out who was calling shots and wind for us! Extra interweb points for anyone who recognizes this distinguished gentleman (no, not me, the good looking one in the black hat).

Our mystery guest was Major Ed ("Jim") Land, the father of USMC Scout Sniper Program. I believe Gunny Hathcock was one of the first graduates of the Major's course.

Absolutely, the Marines were asking the Major to sign just about everything, including ammo boxes. The USAF guy (me) asked for a picture.

No, the A1s were all shot by PWS folks.

The matches are usually held in April and September. The club's site is here, where you can see upcoming events, and the calendar is located here, where all of the seven ranges are updated and posted. Pay attention to "R4" which is the 1,000yrd range and know it can be fluid. However, I started shooting this season in April and there have only been two weekends the ranges were not open and we did get closed down early (noonish) twice. Not a bad record over a season.

You, or anyone for that matter, can come down on a weekend day when R4 is open and shoot long range as a guest of a member for $10. We usually shoot 300/600 on a Saturday and 800/1000 (or 1000 only) on Sundays. You need to being your own targets or let us know ahead of time if you need a KD.

"KD" is known distance, which R4 is, a known distance range. The targets they use are 7'x7' and called KDs. We will usually paste a high power or F-Class facer on the KDs.
