I have a 24" obermeyer AMU barrel on a 700 action. It has been coated in birdsong black T.

If i want to reduce the weight could I have the barrel cut to 20"? how much weight would I save? What if I it was also fluted?

I assume this would mess up the black T coating?

Re: questing on modifying a barrel

Answer to your questions are yes. Check Lija site he has a barrel weight chart.

Re: questing on modifying a barrel

thanks, so the black T would have to be re-done then

Re: questing on modifying a barrel

Unless you want it to look like a zebra when you flute it.

The black T is a surface coating like paint. If you slice the end off or run a ball mill down the length removing metal you will remove the coating.

Re: questing on modifying a barrel

what if i dont flute it? will the black T be messed up?

how much weight would 4" be on the obermeyer amu barrel?

Re: questing on modifying a barrel

Yeah the end would still get messed up. don't for get that there's a good chance that the metel shavings coming off the lathe might also make thier way back to hit parts of the finish that wasn't cut and mess that up also.
