i usually load 308 win, but have decided to start reloading for a ar-15.

barrel lengths are 20", 16", 12-3/4"

i am using lee deluxe steel dies 4 die set w/ hornady lock rings.

i have 3000 win nt cases. all prepped and full length size to factory lengths.
hornady 55 grain fmj bullets.
standard cci primers for 223.

powders i have read to use varget and h335, but i would prefer to use varget because it is a little bit cheaper.

what grains should i start out with for this?

i know to keep it within the limits of what the books say.

i also have 11 lbs of imr-4895 will this work in a ar-15 for 223?

but i am trying to get a better picture of what work reliably in a gas system auto.

Re: question about 5.56x45 for ar-15's

I have used both Varget and IMR4895 for my .223 loads. I have loaded over 2k rounds with these powders. They both work but you get low velocities. It's fine for plinking imo. They just aren't ideal IMO for .223 but since I load mainly for .308Win I like to standardize as much as I can.

With Varget, my go to load is 24grn Varget under a 55grn FMJ. With IMR4895, I noticed that I get pressure signed out of my AR15 even at 23 grns so I have since stopped and stuck with Varget. Many people can run 25grn IMR4895 fine...just that I can't.

My favorite powder is W748. Meters easily and shoots well in almost any bullet weight. BLC 2 is also a good 223 powder. I use to use IMR 4895 but got tired of constant spills with it.
