The gun I am interested in painting has a stainless steel barrel, and people say the rifle would look best if the barrel was just painted black. How much different does a black painted barrel look from the standard black metal? Would I have to repaint all the black components black so that the consistency is the same, or is there a black material that I can coat the stainless steel to look like the rest of the parts?

What I mean by "standard black metal" is the factory black finish put on most firearm metal. I'm thinking that I will not be able to get the same look on a stainless steel barrel if I use paint.

couldn't you just have the barrel black oxide coated? hold up way better than paint and match most black actions.

I was reading about that earlier. Where could that be done? Are there different kinds of black oxide coatings for stainless steel?

Well I found a place nearby, I'm going to go look at some their finished coated products before I make and decisions.

look for a metal finishing place near you, usually you can drop it off and pick up in day or two. just tell them what you want, if you want dull have them beadblast outside first....there are alot of different options in finishes and colors and durability even for stainless steel. I have even had the inside of barrels done and have been working on how to make them last longer with a few of the newer finishes, with some impressive results.

Huh, so I could get all the components finished in the same stuff if I wanted. I am very worried about the finish in the bore, crown, and the threading. Something doesn't feel right with the idea. That 62.50 cerakote deal looks good too.

You do not have to, they can finish only what you want. Im just saying I have had them do all kinds of stuff, but Im lucky in that a buddy of mine runs a facility that does this. The possibilities are endless, just need to talk to them and figure out what you want. The shit isnt paint though and most is more durable than the metal it goes on....just a suggestion if you only want to do the outside of barrel to match action. Ceracoat also looks really good on the rifles Ive seen on here, maybe that would be better for you.

Be happy to coat it all black with heat cure cerakote for you. If you look in the Group Buy section or use the hot link provided above. The blacks would match and if there is anything you don't want coated just annotate it and we will do it. 15 days or less till it's on it's way back to you

I'm sorry to take a dump on this thread, a friend off the hide is going to cerakote when we customize the rifle. I've decided to do all the non stock components in Mcmillan olive.
