Hi
I have a custom savage rifle with LW 28" heavy barrel in 7.08 caliber. I want a good clear scope for it but I havnt got thousands.
I realy like the Leupold scopes. Im looking at a Leupold FX-III 25x40mm AO . I want to shoot from 250 to 800 meters on the range. Will this fixed mag be ok for this ?

thanks

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

Single targets at a single distance? If so, you won't need FFP.

Is the distance known? No time limit? If so, you won't need a Mil Dot reticle.

A fixed 25x may have some trouble with mirage on hot days.

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

Ah ok.

No sometimes the distances will not be known, but between these two distances.
I did look at the Springfield Army 4-14x56 scopes on ebay, but im realy unsure about the quality of these glasses. I understand the reticle is calibrated for .308 168gr match ammo, and the 7.08 shouldnt be too far off this. (I could be wrong)

If you are planning to hit a 1.1 MOA target you need the ability to be more precise than 1.1 MOA.

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

The 25x Leupold is a bad choice for your purposes for several reasons. First, it has an extremely narrow field of view. Second (and potentially most problematic) it only has 40MOA of internal adjustment range (20MOA up/20MOA down from mechanical zero) which will seriously limit your ability to dial in the scope at greater distances and rules out running a sloped scope base. Finally, the reticle (either a 1/2MOA or 3/8MOA dot) may hamper your abilities with the scope on 10" plates at 800m. At that range a 1/2MOA dot will cover an area of approx. 4" in diameter or roughly half your target size.

Fixed magnification is fine for your stated purposes, but you don't need 25x. 10x is probably enough (if it is enough for your eyes) and I wouldn't want anything more than 20x fixed at the largest. I don't know what your options are in France in terms of brands, but the SWFA SS in either 10x, 16x or 20x would be an excellent option.

Also, do yourself a favor and stay clear of the Springfield Armory Scopes!! There are several threads here on them and I won't get into it all here again, but they are not well-built, the glass is marginal at best and they tend not to hold up very well.

I did this to get the rifle up and running and 2 years later I am still running it. It just does what I do with the rifle.

I shoot a lot of steel to 1kyds and hunt with it also.

For the money I think its a good option

I would stay away from bdc reticles, to many things can change.

Good luck.

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

I would have to buy something from the US, as the availability of scopes other than busnell or Zeiss are very limited. Plus the price is around twice what every other country would have to pay for the same scope. Ive never heard of "SuperSniper" scopes. I will look into them.

Thanks

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

I am suprised that Zeiss isnt available in France. If you have considered them, I would consider them again based on the fact that the glass (for under 1000 US) is some of the best you can get your hands on. I know that you are wanting a fixed power scope, but anything more than 10-15 power will kill your ability to quickly acquire the target at those distances.

You should be able to call Zeiss directly. Their conquest in a 4x14x40 should be perfect. Not fixed, but perfect!

If not, check out the others listed.

Good Luck

Re: Question about Fixed magnification

"Their conquest in a 4-14x40" for a variable, it is...
X - X x X, or, 1-10 X 44

FFP does't make a difference in a fixed power scope, only in a variable. 10 x 42, 10 x 44, 10x50 are all good to 1000M. Anything more than 10x and you get to play with mirage too much.

If a scope isn't FFP that means the reticle is only accurate on ranging at the manufacturers specified magnification. Most variable mil dot scopes before FFP were made to range at 10x then magnify after ranging, then FFP was made so one could range at any power

As i did state, zeiss is available along with Bushnell in France.
But French prices are about 2 to 3 times what you pay in the US !

I payed around 280 euros (377 dollars) for a Bushnell banner 2 years ago.

I looked through my Bushnell today, and set the mag at X10 and focused it in , looking at 800meters. I find it very hard to belive that someone could hit a 10" target with that magnification at that range. It was barely 3mm in the scope veiw.
Ive looked at the SS reveiws now and im impressed with what ive read. Just trying to decide between the 16x42 or the 10x42 as people keep recommending.
