I recently bought an Alphamount after reading glowing reviews on this forum and elsewhere. Overall, it seems like a very stout and well-designed mount. A couple of things surprised me however.
Right away, I could see that there was a lot of back and forth movement in the picatinny slot. I then put the Alphamount in an old weaver rail that I had lying around and presto, it fits perfectly with virtually no slop. I guess it's not a big deal because you are supposed to push the mount forward when torqueing it in any event. Still, it seems a bit odd, as I doubt anyone would put a mount like that on an actual weaver base. Are all Alphamounts like that or did I somehow get a version specifically designed for a weaver base?
Another thing that surprised me, especially in light of all the positive things I’ve read about Near’s fit and finish, is the fact that my Alphamount has a some visible machining marks. They are mostly cosmetic, but one thing that bugs me a little is the grinding marks on the steel clamps that grab the rail. They are CNC machining marks that have not been polished to a smooth finish. They are not deep but you can feel them if you drag your fingernail across. Do you guys think that these tool marks could interfere with the clamps grabbing the rail properly or am I overthinking it? Do you have similar marks on your mounts?
