Guys I am considering buying a PTR-91, times being what they are the shop wont have it for long. so I have to ask

What kind of reapeatable accuracy are you getting from these

do the g3 mags work OK

Let me hear your positives and negatives please

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

It's a good gun. With match ammo expect 1-2.5 moa scoped at 100.
G3 mags work no sweat.

Excellent clone, however supposedly the early non threaded rifles had tight chambers. The buffers are ok, a G3 heavy is always nicer.

Mine was a really good gun, no complaints. Sold it to get another HK style rifle.

The thick target bbl is heavier than G3 spec and it does not taper down at the flash hider, but this is purely and visual issue.

If you want to reload pass because they beat the crap out of brass.Tiger is right about the accuracy 1-2 moa is the norm.I've had many H&K rifles and always got rid of them for the same reason the ergonomics suck. You cant reach the mag release without taking your hand off the grip. The charging handle horid and very difficult to manipulate smooth or efficient. And the bolt does not stay open on an empty mag.Optics mounting is less then ideal. The sights are very good.If you get one make sure it's with the wide forend the slim line is all but useless.

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

Hello I am new here and have just been lurking for a while. Also I am no expert marksman however I have owned two PTR91s and they were both very good guns and I shoot 1-2moa at 100 yards. The fit and finish on these rifles is very nice they are the best 308 HK clones on the market.

As mentioned in the last post you could do a few minor upgrades and really get one of these set up nice. Here are a few I would suggest.

1) HKG3 2 stage heavy buffer or HK MSG90 2 stage buffer

2) A trigger job: I would go with Williams Trigger Specialites http://www.williamstriggers.com/ check out their WTSG1 trigger it is a set trigger with 2 to 2.5 lbs of pull

Bill Springfield also does excellent HK trigger work http://www.triggerwork.net/paddlemag.html

3) I am also a big fan of the Mag-Pul stock

Anyway I had my PTRs decked out and I loved them but I ended up selling and I am in the process of haveing a HK MSG90, HK SG1 and HK91 clone built by Jason at IGF. I hope to get them back in about two months i sent them in back in Dec.

Here is a link about my builds if you are interested http://www.militaryfirearm.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=2618

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

If your that worried about accuracy, you're barking up the wrong tree with these. They are combat accurate.... The standard models are not precision target rifles as the name implies and AS A WHOLE weren't intended to be back when they were designed. With that said, they are built like a tank, pick one up and shake it, not too many semi-autos are that solidly made. They are reliable, fun to shoot, and put large quantities of .308 downrange... The mags are cheap and yes they work just fine. Last thing, dont bother running match ammo out of these to get the highest accuracy, you waste $30 a magazine, you tear your brass to hell, and what, to tighten a group another inch with a battle rifle?

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

Here are a few photos of how I had my PTR91s set up. The first two photos are of my PTR91K with the 16" barrel. The second two photos are of my standard PTR91 with 18" barrel.

I am getting this second hand so take it for what it is worth but the gentleman I sold my standard PTR91 too told me that he took the rifle as shown in photo 3 and added a 3-9 power scope I am not sure what brand or objective size). He said that after doing this he consistantly shot five shot groups at 100 yards .75 to 1" moa with 168gr federal gold match. This rifle has a Blackmarket US made MSG90 stock with HK heavy 2 stage buffer, IGF US made muzzle break and Williams Trigger specialites set trigger with 2-2.5 pounds of pull.

There are some other things that can be done to increase accuracy on these rifles. For example you could have MSG90/PSG1 stiffing rails welded to the reciever. This greatly increases the accuracy of this type of rife. However as stated before the PTR91 is a 1-2.5" moa shooter at 100m out of the box.

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

Wow Guys, thank you for all of the factual info. Seeing the same story from everyone really helps my decision making process. Its nice to see that everyone pretty much said the same thing and not alot of opinions. I am also thankful about you mentioning the reloading aspect as I forgot to ask about the fluted chambers.

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

I just thought I might sugest that you check out www.hkpro.com

If you look in their clone section over there you will find tons of info about accuray as well as reloading and what mods are possible

Here is one thread in particular that has some good info and shows what these rifles can be capable of when set up properly.

Re: Question for PTR-91 shooters and owners

I don't own a PTR, but I do have an HK 91.

With regard to the brass being beat up, this is very true.

The solution to this is to add a port buffer. Small metal clip that has a rubber bumper on it. Does a great job of saving your brass. You will still get fluting on the brass, but this seems to be mostly cosmetic and the brass can still be reloaded. A port buffer may not fit if you get a PTR that has a welded on scope rail, though you could probably modify the device if needed.

Port buffers can be found at either hkspecialist.net or hkparts.net. They are not cheap, but if you are big into reloading, they will eventually pay for themselves.

Also, +1 on HKPro.com. If you have ANY questions about anything HK related, that is the place to go.
