OK so I'm looking into understanding ballistics, just the basics for now. Shooting Hornady 168Gr.BTHP Using website info on trajectory

Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 2.00 0.00 -8.50 -24.70 -50.00

Scope has 1/4 moa adjustments with 1moa at 100yds=1inch, 1moa at 500yds=5inchs.

So i would have to adjust for 500yds down ?moa or mil to get it in the ball park. Once i get that i can start making up the dope for a range card.

Anyone have simple formula's to get help?
I'm a great shot but when it comes to math and applying it to real world applications i want to be close.

Re: Question on scope adjustment

The trajectory information you have is for a rifle zeroed at 200 yards. While that's used by hunters, precision rifle shooters most often zero at 100 yards.

If you zero at 100 yards, your dope will look pretty closely to this:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Code:</div><div class="ubbcode-body ubbcode-pre" ><pre>
Range(yards) MOA
100 0
200 2
300 5
400 8
500 12
</pre></div></div>

Beyond that distance, you will need more accurate muzzle velocity in order to use a ballistic program to get accurate data. If you have a place to shoot longer distances, dope derived from shooting progressively longer distances is the best way to get dope.

Re: Question on scope adjustment

Go HERE , and plug in the info on the round. This will allow you to make your own range cards. With the data you gave, this should get you close. (note 100 yard zero)

Range Elev Wind
(yards) (moa) (moa)
0 --- ---
100 0 0.73
200 -1.9 1.51
300 -4.65 2.35
400 -7.9 3.25
500 -11.62 4.23
600 -15.84 5.3

Re: Question on scope adjustment

This is gonna save me time and ammo. Thanks guys.

Re: Question on scope adjustment

just remember each yardage will make your scope move up a 1/4 of an inch.

100=1/4
200=1/2
300=3/4
400=1.000
500=1.250
600=1.5
700=1.750
800=2.000
900=2.250
1000=2.5

but like one has already said.you will need a better muzzel velocity to be able to use a BC calculater.
