If any one can help me with how to use this tool that would be great. I have an M40A3 308 and a Remington 338 LM and bought the Hornady toll and modified Brass to measure what I need to make my overall bullets. I want to hear from you guys the best way to handle this. Seems like I do it and mine are longer than what is recommend by all the books so I wanted your expert opinions.

Re: Question using the Hornady Modified Bullet Tool

I realize this is off topic, but maybe it can help you out in the future.

I take a piece of fire-formed, then neck sized brass and slit the neck length wise from the mouth to the shoulder/neck junction.

Seat a bullet very long and then chamber the round. Take it out and measure the base to ogive with the Stoney Point (now Hornady) tool.

Costs next to nothing and works very well.

Re: Question using the Hornady Modified Bullet Tool

I have and use the comparator tool. This is how I handle it:

1. Remove Bolt
2. Screw Modified Case Onto Tool
3. Adjust The Slide So A Bullet Is Completely In The Case
4. Slide The Tool And Case Into The Chamber Of The Rifle
5. With my Left Thumb I Hold the Tool In Place
6. With My Right Hand I Slowly Push The Slide Foward Until It Stops.
7. (TRICKY PART!) While Holding The Slide in Place With My Middle And Ring Firngers, I Turn The Set Screw With My Right Thumb And Pointer Finger.

It may appear that the bullet is too long. This is due to the jump from your case to the lands. Reduce this messurement by up to 0.020". Load one dummy case at this length, and see if it will be too long for your mag well.
The messurements in the books are general guidelines for all rifles. This is reload for one specific rifle, and these rounds should not be fired from any other rifle!

Hope this helps,
Hugo
