I had an older Rem700 .308 that I had bought back in the 80's. The barrel in the gun is a bit worn out. So, I decided that I would take the action off and build a different gun off of the action. I have a couple rifles that I have had someone else build for me. On this one, I wanted to be able to say I did this. Since my daughter is helping me with the build and I am going to hand it down to my daughter eventually, I figured this would be a good memory for us both.

I have a friend that is going to help me on the machine work, but everything else I am going to do on my own. I have never built on on my own so this will be a good learning experience for me and my daughter.

The action, which you can tell by the pictures, is a R700 Short Action that was originally chambered in .308 Win. I have narrowed my next caliber down to three. The .243, the 6.5x47 Lapua, and the .260 Rem. I have not been able to get it narrowed down any further yet. As for the stock, I am torn between the AI 1.5, the McMillan M40A-1 HTG, McMillan A-5 and the McMillan Adjustable A3-5. If I understand what I am reading about the Accuracy International, it does not need bedding. Another plus about the AI 1.5 is I will not need to find "bottom metal" for the AI. I am going with a Krieger barrel with a #10 M.T.U. contour. As for the length, I am really thinking about 22". I have already installed a Timney trigger set at 2lbs.

I want to run the heavier, longer, & higher "BC" bullets so the research that I found is below. What do you all think about these twist rates?

The twist rate for each caliber
.243 = 1:10" T
.260 = 1:9" T
6.5x47 Lapua = 1:8" or 1:8.5" T

The pictures still have the original bolt in it. I am going to change it out and go with a bolt from PTG. Their bolts have some features that I like. I figured it would be cheaper for me to go this way than to have someone add the features that I want to my current bolt, like spiral fluting for example.

Anyway, I would love to hear some opinions or thoughts from you guys.

Re: R700 Project...

As far as caliber, .260 is very good for long range and Lapua brass is available if you reload. That's what my current project is. Here is a good review to check out:

1-9" is probablly good enough. I went with 1-8.5" based on my reading. A lot of people use 1-8" but I haven't seen anything to make me think it's necessary.

A lot of people like the AICS but I don't care for the plastic exterior. If you want the more conventional look of the McMillon with a great chassis sytem like the AICS check out Manners stocks with the mini-chassis option. They will make it fit whatever barrel contour you chose perfectly and will also make a slight mod to accept the Timney for no extra charge. There is also a whole thread in the equipment section on different chassis systems that you can check out for other ideas.

Whatever you go with, enjoy the build and good luck!

Re: R700 Project...

If you want to run the heavies in the 139-142 in the 260 you want the 1-8 or 1-8.5 according to everything I've seen. The 1-9 will be cutting it very close to stability in certain situations so no reason to risk it. Better to have a bit extra twist then not enough.

Re: R700 Project...

I am on the 260 wagon too. Very nice round. I use the 140 amax and 142 smks and they do smoke my 308 175s pretty handily.

Barrel is a 9 twist I believe. Havent had any stability issues, but I would have liked something a bit faster just for peace of mind.

AI or manners all the way.
