In a word, <span style="font-style: italic">"No"</span>. While built-in recoil lugs on picatinny rails provide a welcome measure of extra security by spreading recoil forces over another point of contact, 8-40 screws are plenty strong and have been proven on thousands of Tac Ops rifles deployed around the world. This includes the .300WM and other Magnum calibers, including one in use by the U.S.S.S..

Although the .308 doesn't have the recoil of a Magnum I had my X-Ray 51's receiver drilled for 8-40 screws as added strength for the weight of a PMII 5-25X[56mm] (about 38 oz.) and Leupold Mark 4 Highs (9.9 oz.). That's three (3) pounds of scope and rings riding on two 8-40 screws.
